For the first time since I've used the program, I had realt trouble using it. I got to the final stages or doing the taxes and ran into a "data verification" error. The program highlighted the "error" and said that it needed to be fixed, but even though the box was highlighted, and the cursor appeared in the box, there was no way to edit the edit it, and there was no way that I saw to have the program take me back just to the "error" so the information could be changed. Over the next couple days I spent several hours trying to fix the "error", but eventually just started to whole return over. I still don't know what the "error" was, but am upset the program told me there was one, highlighted the "error", yet still wouldn't allow me to fix it without having to do the whole return over again. The second time, I had no problems and the whole process took less time than I'd wasted trying to fix an "error."
Nice program in general, but fell short in some areas in which it promotes itself. On its cover it is billed as being for "Self-Employed/Rental" users. This is what I needed it for, and this is where it suffered.
My wife is self-employed with an ACA Health plan tied to that business. She has also owned rental property in previous years in which she was not self-employed. HRB's software does not allow us to specify which business is tied to the ACA plan (something that TurboTax does, by the way), and insists on lumping both the rentals and her other business together for that purpose. Further complicating matters is that she is the sole property owner, and therefore an active owner in the rentals. She absorbed a loss on the property this year and HRB was unable to perform any of the ACA Tax credit calculations because of this, meaning that we had to do our calculations by hand and then enter them manually.
I really think that a program that advertises itself as designed for the self-employed and rental income users would be able to handle such income. Apparently not.
If you have more than one business, or have rental property AND another business, I suggest that you look elsewhere.
I typically go to a tax accountant for income tax preparation but decided to save the fees this year and use the H & R Block software instead. I'm glad that I did. While I ended up having to pay, I felt the software was easy to use and felt confident that the filing was correct. I will most likely use it again in the future.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
I've been using HR Block for at least the past ten years and this software has helped me through the details of having a rental property that otherwise would have been beyond my knowledge base. I do have to say though, it seemed a bit more complicated to maneuver through the process for my 2021 taxes than in previous years. I didn't feel quite as confident as I have in the past.
