H&R Block Tax Software is accurate and easy to use (despite the mess that is our country's tax system). I've been using the H&R Block software for nearly two decades and have been fully satisfied. Since I live in WA, the "state" return is not an issue (no state income tax). Some of the more exotic tax issues require a little digging (I made a "appreciated stock charitable gift" last year) but in the end the directions made sense and the resultant output appeared to match the IRS instructions. Note: I am a former licensed tax preparer.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
I was able to complete my return, but there are times when it tells you that there is a problem with something in a certain line, but then the line it is telling you to move it to is grayed out. It was your software that put it on the "incorrect line" in the first place, so how am I supposed to know where to move it to? So I think the return is correct after much tweaking, but am not 100% sure.
something about my computer and this software that isn't compatible. Every year I get that it can't be updated, to check date and time and ultimately I have to download it onto my laptop to transmit the data. I like how easy this program is to follow along but wish it could be figured out for my computer.
Had problem with efile return when primary tax payer was deceased during that tax year. Entered all info correctly and IRS rejected. May not be HR block issue but support was nil
The software installed fine, but would not update without crashing. This happened repeatedly, even after other updates, and it happened with both federal and state updates. In past years, this has not been a problem; this was just an issue with the 2021 software. I also had to do an amended return. The federal amended return worked well, but I was unable to amend the state return. I ended up having to amend the state return using paper forms and doing everything manually.
Block's software failed to allow my wife and me the larger personal exemption for seniors. It also failed to allow a deduction for expenses for a rental property that it allowed the prior year. Your system is confusing and cumbersome to use, and I am a tax attorney. God knows what it does to people who don't know enough to question it.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
