Overall the software does a reasonable job at a reasonable price. The biggest weakness is that is does not give a lot of explanation for a lot of the more complex tax issues. I would like it to link to detailed information about how some of the more complex tax issues are handled if I want to pull it up. I have tried using the State Tax Software for Wisconsin as a completely out of state resident. It did not work correctly at all. I had to do the state tax completely by hand on my own. If you are buying it to use if for state taxes as well and you are out of state, do not bother.
H&R software was easy to use and covered all of the areas needed. I have used it for many years and count on it to make it straightforward to prepare taxes. Highly recommended.
I have used this program for about 10+ years and have found it to be very user friendly. I like the ability to auto fill last years data onto the return each year it helps to assure that you have all the information from the previous year . I prepared taxes for 25 years and this program is as easy to navigate as the one used by professional services.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
The actual software is fine. It seems to be complete. However pay attention to all the extra charges and fees that you think should be included and are not. They suck you in on the front page that says "Start for Free" After you spend hours inputting your information they hit you with extra charges. I just want to buy the software, have a CD, input my information and save everything to my computer. This is not an easy option anymore and they want to control your information by storing it in "The Cloud" Still cheaper than a CPA but more frustrating.
NY state tax was not clearly done for non resident rental income. No helpful links. Confusing. Paid the tax due that the program called for but have received a small refund from NYS for overpayment. Federal passive rental income is also not clear, but hopefully moves numbers to the right spot.
