The federal program seems to be good, but the state program (Indiana) leaves a lot to be desired, and can't be trusted. This is the second year where Indiana DOR has recalculated my refund, and made significant changes. Last year, it was a refund reduction of almost $8000. This year it was a refund increase of almost $1500. Based on this experience, state programs, at least the Indiana program is not to be trusted to provide accurate results.
I have been using since it was called Tax Cut and now under the H&R Block franchise it continues to be robust but easy to use. It is excellent for rental property and investments and maintains loss carryforwards from year to year well if you stay with the application.
This software, for lack of a better word, FAILS miserably to address state income tax situations involving the states TX and PA. In my case, my reported income as an Independent Contractor clearly makes the distinction of BOTH incomes reported on the same 1099-NEC form. Incidentally, the Federal Income calculations are accurate; however, the State Income Tax filing for PA is clearly NOT, which has resulted in my filing via mail. The reporting of PA tax liability on the program fails to account for earnings specific to the state of Pennsylvania; and instead COMBINES both earnings Texas and PA resulting in a higher tax liability for PA!
I would NOT recommend this program for Resident (Texas) and Non-Resident (Pennsylvania) tax filings!
The interface/menus could be improved. All in all, however, software is pretty easy to use. Also, it would be VERY helpful if tracing annotations were added to provide a computational “paper trail” as to how/with with what data numbers on the return were calculated.
This was the gold standard, the deception inside now makes it a risk, perhaps a big risk. Why? Inside this software meant to deal with something safe and secure there will be a prompt about your name not matching. The form is actually a form to allow the release of portions to your information to other companies, basically a license to sell the information. I have used this software in multiple forms for well over 10 years and this year was disappointing when I saw this blatant breech of trust. Whoever allowed this into the software obviously had no care for customers.
