For years I've used H&R Block software to prepare my taxes before going to a professional (I have rental property and own home and stocks). This was done in order to be better prepared and organized. I have learned that the final results were almost identical with my long time preparer, that had retired two years ago. Last year the new tax service was so disappointing (pressure to maximize profits by rushing and cutting the corners) that this year I have decided to fill my taxes by myself. The software is very clear, easy to navigate, and the help is available when needed.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
Keeps your numbers straight for you. Interface doesn’t change from year to year (used it maybe 10 years), so you don’t have to “learn a new program” every year.
Used this program for the last 5 years but will not buy again. There were too many bugs in the 2019 program. Just to mention a few, 401k contribution limit outdated and unnecessary questions about itemized deductions from previous year even if imported data shows standard deductions.
There were some questions that weren't clear on the sole proprietorship business and home. Interest was duplicated. Glad I caught it. Otherwise it is pretty easy to use.
