as usual makes this tedious process, less tedius

Had to "upgrade" this year due to owning rental property.
The entries for the rental property transactions were stright forward and intuitive.

Most data is transferred over from last year, this is a plus.
for enterring the various 1099's the software said.. "good news" we downloaded your data (what? I don't remember this) anyway the software did not downlod any data .. And it was more difficult this year with multiple 1099R's from the same firm.. I had to reenter firm name , address tax ID # etc. several times manually.. I don't remember doing this before... tech support please fix this for next year, allow me to copy info or something similar.

After all my 1099R's were entered the software quized me about if I was required to take MRD's (minimun req'd distributions), hmm I thought should the software would know my age...and then wanted me to type in the amount of distributions I had taken, HMMM again, I just entered all those 1099's, with teh "ditribution codes"
Looks to me like the quality and ease of use has dropped a notch..this should be addressed for 2019 to keep us as customers.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Most of the input was straight forward but when it came to depreciation, the depreciation code could only be input directly into the tax form and there was no explanation as to what code to use (codes 1-26).
Pros: Easy to import documents
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good for federal taxes, but lacking for state

This is my first time using H&R Block tax software, and overall the experience was okay. I imported my 2017 taxes that were done with competing software, and everything for federal imported as expected. The interview process is different than what I was used to, but seemed complete. The navigation also took some time to figure out, but I consider it to be part of the learning curve needed when one switches brand of tax prep software. Overall I preferred the H&R Block interview process.
The state software is very lacking, and it's obvious that not much attention was given to it. While the state tax has an interview, the process/procedure wasn't near as organized or polished as the federal interview. My state taxes include the main income tax forms and a separate property tax refund form. While the interview asked about both forms, it only printed out the main income tax form. I had to manually locate and print the property tax refund forms. Fortunately I knew that I was missing the property tax form so I didn't miss out on the property tax refund. The other issue I had, and wasn't used to, was the need to go to the state's Web site to download payment forms. One would expect that to be part of the tax software.
It's possible (and likely) that this particular state software is a mess because I live in a state that couldn't decide if they wanted to follow the feds lead for simplified taxes.
I tried H&R Block tax software because of a friend's recommendation, and because it was lower cost than the main competing software. What I like is that there are fewer versions, and those versions include more options. I will likely use it again next year.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare

Good Software w/ one major exception

The program does not handle PTP Schedule K-1's particularly wrt referral of losses and several items of K-1 that require special handling
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare

Simple and superb

I find the product easy to use, informative and it meets my needs in tax preparation. I like doing my taxes! and learning about updated tax issues. My ttax return was simpler this year, so I could not benefit from more features of the program! Thanks so much for your excellent service. We shall meet again.. Be Well!
