Some improvements I would like to see

I had a few problems where I would like improvements: 1) When in lists (examples: 1099-B securities, charitable donations) the text size would occasionally get bigger, pushing the scroll bar off the edge of the window. Presumably I had done some accidental 2-finger gesture on my trackpad. But no conscious 2-finger gesture would shrink the text to bring back the scrollbar, and I could not scroll down to add new entries or go to the next page. I had to save the return, then close and reopen the program. This happened over 50 times while I was trying to prepare my return. (FWIW, I use Windows 7) 2) Charitable donations: a) It has a fixed number of lines that were not enough for me. I had to put two org names on a line, which was difficult because of a limited # of characters per description field. Please make the list expandable. b) Could you make the list sortable? The program copied last year's list of charities, in the order they were entered. If the list was sorted, it would make it easier to find and add this year's contribution. 3) 1099-B securities list: a) Could you also make this list sortable? By one's choice of sale date, CUSIP#, or name? The initial problem I had was that my brokerage issued a corrected 1099. I downloaded the corrected version on top of the prior download. I now had dual entries for each security, roughly 160 entries, which were not sorted. Finding the duplicates and deciding which one I should delete was a nightmare. Sorting would have made it a trivial task. b) An alternative would be to allow me to export the list to a spreadsheet so I could sort it there. I can't even do a highlight then ctl-c copy and ctl-v paste it to a spreadsheet. Ctl-c doesn't work on the lists.
Although there is always room for improvement, let me say that I have been using this program since it was called TaxCut and ran on text-only PCs without Windows, and have come back year after year.

Generally good with a few annoying quirks

I have been using HRBlock software for several years now. This year, I notice a few quirks that take away from the warm fuzzy feeling that the program knows what it is doing. The software prompted me for information in the interview about the car I donated, but did not populate the forms correctly with the VIN and year of the car; it did, however, catch these errors one at a time, the VIN in its first validity check, and the car year in the efile validity check, allowing me to enter the values (again) directly on the forms. I also find the printing features a bit odd... e.g. it shows that you will print several forms, with checkboxes that look active; however, if I don't want to print the instruction sheet, I can't just de-select, but instead have to go to the forms page and select from among the huge list of available forms the ones I want to print. Besides these glitches in user experience, the software is sufficient for my needs.

No help on Pub 939 re: annuities if no 1099
on April 3, 2017

The interview about annuities needs to indicate the possibility of "no 1099" on the first page; and then it should walk through the info needed (ages, amount paid) and automatically calculate the taxable amount.

The program did a good job of walking me through all the entries. I did have some difficulties near the end. In the accuracy check, the program deleted some information I know that I entered in the non cash donations to charity. It created another non cash entry which took me a little while to figure out. Also, the instructions for how to enter Medicare premiums for SS retirees, during itemization, are a bit ambiguous.
