confusing areas

I found that as I made entries, the program more than once entered my value twice. It was probably something I did, but there was no check and balance system to tell me that the same value was already entered once. I also found claiming "business use of the home" very confusing. I had to go back three times and make changes to the worksheet to make the program work right with the correct values. There was also no explanation when a downloaded value from last year was filled in with a highlighted number and an "x" next to it, you actually had to click outside of the box for the program to register and include the value. Just little changes that I found cost me time.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
Cons: Time consuming

Unnecessarily complicated to finish up.

I actually enjoyed doing my returns by hand, but they got to be so complicated that I had to go to tax software to fill them in. H&R does a pretty good job with that. But then they tack on extra charges to file the state return electronically and to make the Federal payment with a credit card, and both processes are unwieldy in the extreme. Also, when I went to print out the CA voucher, it printed the wrong form, and I had to go back and find the right form by hand.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I've been happy with the ease of use of the product in the past, but when I was filling out the mileage tax deduction part I feel it didn't calculate and reduce my tax liability or it was broken.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Fast
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare

Going Downhill

I've used HRB for many years. Twice I tried Brand X and encountered what I considered to be a severe difficulty, and came home to HRB.
This year, however, I found its most severe deficiencies.
As long as one has "normal" income, expenses (including business expenses), and deductions, it's a great program.
But I ran into two problems this year (I filed my 2018 taxes yesterday, on the extension).
1) My father-in-law passed last year. This left "us" with trust accounts, among other things. Block's handling of the account was atrocious. Most notably, one of the items had an asterisk and comment abbreviation -- that essentially told us it had to be handled in an exception manner. But NOWHERE in its documentation (i.e., Block's) did it tell me how to handle it, or where in the form to put it. And there appears to be no way one can make manual changes to the tax form once it's been created by the software.
2) At the end of everything, I created the stuff to permit Feds and (NY) State to withdraw from my bank account. The "review" of the returns didn't like an apparent discrepancy between the two. But it wouldn't direct me to the place where the discrepancy occurred -- and THEN it locked on the discrepancy report page, and wouldn't move from it. (I solved it this morning by filing the Federal only -- and I'll file the State separately.)
In short, it appears that Block has the simple stuff well done, and gets a failing grade on the more complicated issues. This experience is, in essence, going to go away after this year, so it won't keep me from continuing to use them. But Block needs to make an investment in getting its ENTIRE product up to snuff.
Cons: Time consuming

I've been very sick for years, limited income for I only put 20+ years into my pension & SS. So I get by. I suffer from Migraines and doing my taxes is hard. When I was younger I always got my taxes down quickly and on time. But I've missed a few years, It's just to stressfull So I wish the questions were simplier. In 2011 I took them in to be done by a profesional accountant who works all year on Taxes. He put my 1099-R (Pention) on the income line and caused more of my non takable SS taxable costing me $5000 when I only make $45,000 a year. Worst of all he E-filed it before I could review it. Now I wished I would have went to H & R Block that year. For they took it out of my SS for several years. I pay taxes just not that much. So I'm happy with your software, it's just to long and causes me to file late now. But anyway thanks for saving me money each year. SE

I have used HRB for many years. This year, upon the passing of my father-in-law, the handling of various accounts provided difficulties. The Block software was less than its usual "helpful" in getting me to the right places to "fill in" the required information; the "Help" column was useless, and the software actually locked up because it presumed a discrepancy between Federal and State numbers.
I eventually solved the problem by filing only the Federal -- and then filing the State "by itself". Block -- please give the "unusual" situations the same attention you give to the "normal" filing.
Pros: Maximizes refund
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to import documents
