Missing some logic
on October 12, 2019

The status for owed vs refund was not always correct. The page where you could apply part of the refund to next year's withholdings did not show correct values if the return updated to new values. Finally, I had to find and manually enter HSA contributions using Form 8889. I hope it was complete as I did not find the form to report distributions from the HSA.
Cons: Time consuming
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Easy to use and great review edits. Tried Turbo Tax 1 year, but went back to Tax Cut, which was easily transitioned.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Fast

This is our fifth year of using H&R Block software for our family returns. It has been a good experience. This year, with all the tax changes, it was more of a challenge. There were a few kinks that need to be fixed. It also would be nice to click on a cell and see what makes up that total.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents

Federal and state editions have bugss
on October 14, 2019

The 2018 edition was great, as usual, except for a bug in the federal and a significant bug in the SC state edition..
The federal had a problem where the 1099 had an address (to which the employer mailed it) which is different from the legal address I am using. This applies when one has a temporary job in another state, for example. I could have faked the 1099 address in Block but it was important to preserve it for records. It required an OVER-RIDE. not good.
When it came to transferring the amount reported in federal as gross workers comp 1099 income to the SC state (where the entire amount is exempt) Block "lost" $5000 (or so) and this required a manual over-ride, else SC would expect that $5000 was taxable.
I hoope that this is not an indicateor of corporate saving on testing.

I've used this product for years and generally very happy. Have a bit of trouble understanding the dos and don'ts for calculating allowable IRA deductions and, with new tax law, what to do with new details on K-1s from trusts and partnerships. May not apply to many users
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming

Some Obscurity in interview and forms, but OK
on October 15, 2019

Overall the software works well and but navigation in interview requires re scrolling through many topics to get to what you want to return to. It works best if you go straight through and dont come back and make and changes. Its slow to recalculate even when using the recalculate command. Some entries never change even after recalculation. Ex: if your amount due to be applied to following year return changes the origonal number stays in the accuracy review form until you manually change it. (although on the 1040 itself it has corrected automatically)
It does not explain certain need entries and with some really actually easy but obsure worksheet qualifications it forces you to go and do it yourself outside the software.
Ex.When figuring the "Net income" for self employed health insurance deductions it is no help. You are suppose to go use IRS publications. And you know how miserable those worksheets are.
It also took them several years to finally figure out how to do Market Place Health Insurance properly. During those years you could not efile because they were unsure of their own calculations!
In the new 1040 form it leaves out the critical instruction that is on the printed IRS form that explains how line 7 now works. If you didnt know your tax forms well from the previous years you would be utterly confused trying to figure this out.
So generally it works to figure your return but to obscure the method from you so as to make their service appear essential.
I dont think the other softwares are better, but i havent used them in years.
I would recommend this to a friend!
