I paid for the State and federal software. Yet, I could not submit my state taxes electronically since the software did not include a personal property tax rebate or the rebate for my concealed weapons permit. Because of this, my state tax refund will take a minimum of 10 weeks. I feel I deserve a refund or free software for 2025 taxes, as I paid for electronic submission for the state return, but could not use it and had to file a paper return.
Cons: Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good especially if you've used it in previous years because certain information is then prefilled. I wish that the data on capital gains were transferred to the state program. I don't understand why it isn't. Each year I have to use an Excel sheet to calculate how much was due to my earnings and how much was due to my husband's even though in the federal program, the name(s) of the owner are indicated. I also wish that one could sort lists of mutual funds so that they could appear alphabetically in future years.

I have not filed taxes on paper for at least 20 years now and have used Block all but one time. I use the software version as I am opposed to any on-line cloud based system. Filing taxes using the software makes if fully straight forward and I like being able to directly import data from financial institutions. This 2024 filing year though there were a couple of categories where the Block platform was unable to confidently complete some sections and required me to turn to IRS publications to complete the filing. I had not encountered that in previous years.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast

I continue to use H&R Block Deluxe software after many years. But I find the explanations of certain terms - and how to deal with them - insufficient.
Also, it appears the State versions are not as user friendly as the National version. When it does the audit at the end and finds an error, it often just takes you to the actual IRS form and tells you to fix it! It provides no guidance on what needs to be fixed and why. Very frustrating.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare

Timing this year was much better than last year. I’m retired and try to get my tax liability closely estimated before year end for tax planning. Last year I needed to do it by hand because the software had several issues. This year the software was pretty good and usable for tax planning. I find the software to be easy to use and has improved yearly. I have used the this tax software for maybe 20 years. In the early years it was more difficult to use but it was more flexible which was good for me because my income was a little more complicated. As time passed they made it easier to use but the offset was a little less flexibility.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast

I have used H&R Block for years because it is less money than Turbo Tax. I have found it to be very unintuitive, particularly with respect to dealing with the accuracy checks. When accuracy checks are done it would be WAY easier to correct things if you could click on the item that thought to be inaccurate and have it take you directly to the page within the software to go correct it. Instead of that, you are (at best) taken to the actual tax form (rather than the wizard, which would be way easier). Having the option to go directly to the actual tax form might be nice for some people, but it shouldn’t be the default. I also spent 15 minutes troubleshooting a certain issue related to my HSA entries where I had to do my own research regarding how I complete certain parts of the form because the wording in the wizard wasn’t obvious. Overall, the wizard isn’t super intuitive for several types of scenerios.
