I have used H&R for years but I find the interview is becoming more confusing and questions asked are not as easy to understand and answer as they used to be with this program. I find the interview in the later parts of the program to be somewhat obscure and leaving the customer concerned that not everything has been answered correctly or that something has been missed. It may be the result of a US tax code that is so screwed up that the officials that write it can't really understand it - right?
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare

I have been using H&R Block for the past 7 years, it has been easy to install and enter all the tax required information to complete. Most items are easy to understand and answered except a few out of normal questions that I would need to go to the help section to figure out how to answer.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Fast
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

When I ran into problems downloading information from my Merrill Lynch account I contacted H&R. Everyone I interacted with was helpful and spent a considerable amount of time with me attempting to resolve the problem. The only drawback was it took two weeks to resolve the problem after elevation of the issue to two higher tiers.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Hard to import documents

Product works inconsistently

This product worked fine as long as I filed as married filing jointly. However, when I tried to use it as married filing as as a single it erroneously calculated that I failed to satisfy IRS rmd's and erroneously determined that I owed penalties...and I clearly do not!
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The software is simple and effective to use but I've marked it down one star because of the restriction to five for the copies of form 8938 if you want to file. True that this better than the 3 allowed in the 2023 version, but before that there was no such limit. This remains a serious drawback of this software.

The product is very helpful for identifying scenarios required for person tax situations. I've been using HR Block for at least 15 years. For the third year in a row the Mac version doesn't actually update via the built in update utility. This requires manually downloading the updates from the website and installing them as they are released. And for the second year in a row the licensing key generated, as part of the annual auto-renewal, doesn't actually activate the state portion which requires reaching out to support to have it fixed. I had one annoying issue where it asked me to validate REIT business deductions (I don't have a business nor have I explicitly invested in any real estate) but the tool and website couldn't really tell me which section those numbers came from. Turns out it was two numbers combined from two different 1099-DIVs that was labeled with another name. Help articles on these weird correlations would be helpful.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund
Cons: Time consuming
