Program generally is good, but it could be better. For example, if you’re already paying extra for a state program, at least 1 state eFile should be included at no additional cost. Also, the SC state program is missing a crucial form TC-1 for certain tax credits. You can get it from the state, but you’re not able to file the state return online since that missing form must accompany your return.

Good Product - weakness on the MI State Return

I have used the H&R Block tax software for several years and have been very satisfied with it. I have a concern with the way the software works for the State of Michigan tax return, beginning with the 2023 tax year. A law passed in February 2024 which provides retirees with tax relief on their retirement benefits, such as pension and IRA payments reported on a 1099-R. I failed to enter the distribution type (private) for my retirement and pension benefits and did not get the proper subtraction to income that I was allowed. Not selecting that distribution type should have shown as an error in the software, but it did not. I also suggest the software should provide a "What's New" overview for the Federal return and whichever state that you select, so you can see, at a glance, what new laws may impact your own tax situation.
Pros: Easy to prepare
I would recommend this to a friend!

Doing my taxes was for the most part straight forward, no issues. I've used this software for several years now, and find it way more easy to do my taxes compared that other big name. One minor issue that arose. Entering the password for online downloads is awkward. On any of the forms downloaded, the password has tow spaces to make noting it easier. I cut and paste these, but the software does not allow spaces, so the last two valid characters are dropped. This necessitated editing the pasted password, then entering the two truncated letters.

I am very happy with the federal returns. I have been using the deluxe Federal for years . This year I got the deluxe federal and state and although the state was very easy because it copied from the Federal return. I didn't find out until I was ready to file that I had to pay to file the state return and was very unhappy with that. Since I get 5 efiles of federal returns with the deluxe kit and only use one that somehow that would entitle me to a free state return. My mistake.

I've used HR Block software for many years and this is the first year I've had issues. When I tried to efile my returns my state was rejected with a bogus error about my federal return. I had to call into support to find out the error details and even this error detail seems incorrect. It was suggested I wait for the next software update and try efiling my state again.
