I'm retired and do not have to file a state or local tax return. I only file Federal. But I did not E-file any state return, My grandson went to E-file his state return and there was an additional charge--why? I thought you could E-file one state return with no additional charge/

The software worked well until I got to the Kansas state return. The default for the itemized deductions on the state return was “standard deduction” not the higher of the itemized or the standard. The original interview didn’t even cover itemized deductions. I had to backtrack to get to the screen.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

I have used this software for years, I like the federal but the state I use (WV) isn’t very helpful, I always have to research online to figure it out and actually had to amend it to get a credit that was overlooked
