I have used both HR Block TaxCut and TurboTax and have leaned towards HR Block as my preference. I was disappointed this year with 2 things. 1) The software did not seem to provide all the forms needed to file for solar water heater credits. 2) There was a delay in submitting my federal tax due to a software glitch that took about a week to resolve.
Then I discovered that because of the energy credits, I had to file both federal and state on paper. This delayed my filing for the refunds. I prefer electronic for the speed. Perhaps TurboTax would have been similarly frustrating but I am considering using them next year.

I wish I could have gotten some back. One would think that in my tax bracket as a retired teacher I could have seen some benefit in income taxes. But that is not H&R’ s fault. H&R makes it very clear how to file and most of the interpretation is done for you. Filing electronically was also very easy; the IRS accepted everything and took my money within 24 hours. The best was not having to fret over stupid details or whether it was all there. It was a welcome relief.

Cons: Doesn't maximize refund
