I switched over to H&R Block after using TaxAct for several years. My tax return is simple, just barely enough investment activity to require a 1040 filing. HRB cost less to use and file and was slightly easier to work thru.
Chokes on K-1 Forms - Itemized Lists don't line up

I have been using HR Block for a number of years. It is ill-equipped for handling a K-1 from partnerships. It does not recognize codes that are perfectly legal in the IRS guidance pubs. If you create itemized lists on the deductions page (e.g. a list of medical bills or insurance costs), the lists don't line up to the lines they are supposed to. If you want to see the list for 1h, you have to choose 1g, and so on. On the top entry page, the line items are not identified so you have to bring up the form, but it does not align right anyway. There is no easy way to report bugs in the program. It's fine for standard easy returns, but can be a pain in more difficult situations. However, having seen it's main competitor, I still prefer to use this program. It gives you 5 free Federal transmissions,, but wants about $ 20 to send a state in. I don't need five free Federal returns, I need a completely free Federal and one state. I always print my state returns and mail them more cheaply. It says it has printed all the forms for the state return, but VA needs a Schedule E for filing and the program DOES NOT automatically print one. I always have to go back and print another Schedule E to attach.
