Been using H&R Block for years and am satisfied. It's reasonably-priced, it's clearly-written,it's easy to follow its instructions and prompts, and it loads on laptops using older operating systems (like Vista). (I've never been able to load TurboTax.)
I have used the Deluxe software, but I am always disappointed because I cannot file NY non-residence tax return electronically. Also I find that tips and explanations are hard to understand.
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to fix issues, Hard to import
I use tax software to play what-if games before filing to try to find the best return or at least pay the least amount to the IRS. So when I entered a large contribution to my IRA to see what it would get me, I decided it wasn't worth it. So I unchecked the IRA contribution, or rather selected the "neither contributing" for my wife and myself. I assumed that this removed the contribution and to all appearances it did. But what it did do was hide the contribution amount behind a meaningless radio button and if I hadn't printed the form first the IRS would have received a tax form with an IRA contribution I never made. I wonder what they would have thought of that? Don't trust this software, it's poorly written and it lies!
I paid far less for H&R Block and got a much higher return. I've been a TurboTax user for almost twenty years. Over the last 8-10 years, I've been getting annoyed with their price increases and in-app "forced" upgrades, but I've felt locked in, so I stayed with them. This year, I used H&R Block and TurboTax to complete my taxes, which proved an interesting comparison. H&R Block got me higher returns on both Fed and State - about a 35% higher return on Fed. And H&R Block software - including Fed, State, and audit protection - was $100 less than TurboTax. In most ways, TurboTax still has the edge over H&R Block from a user experience perspective. Generally, TurboTax provides a more pleasant experience through design and interaction. However, TurboTax up-sales strategies and forced upgrades annoy users and so negatively impact the user experience. At any rate, the trade-off in user experience is clearly worth it. I paid far less for H&R Block and got a much higher return.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund
Need to fix form 8283 problem ASAP. Cost me over $2000 . Would not let me efile because my FMV was over $5000. I decreased the FMV of my donated vehicle drastically just to be able to e-file. Only then did it go through. My Rejection Code: 32-FD-F8283-030. Please fix problem.
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to fix issues
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Easy to import, Fast
