I was very pleased with the software - been using it for years. But the last update was garbage. I ran the update 3 times before it let me open the program so I could file. Then every time I tried to efile it said I had to run the update. I finally had to mail my return it. DID ANYONE TEST THAT UPDAT!!!! IT APPEARS THE ANSWER IS NO!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good for price, GA Retirement advice is misleading
on April 11, 2017

I have been using H&R Block's tax program (Deluxe) with no problem for years. It is a great value, because it gets the job done at a reasonable price. The only problem I have had so far that I can remember is for tax year 2016. I had to file a GA return, because I moved to Texas in 2015, worked for my GA employer remotely from Texas from Jan - March 2016 and then retired effective April 1, 2016. The advice given by H&R Block Deluxe GA on what part of my retirement income as a non-resident for all of 2016 was taxable by Georgia was at best misleading and not at all helpful. In the hope that H&R Block will correct the instructions, I am going into detail below.
What made the matter confusing was that the H&R Block GA program instructions said:
Pension and Annuity income is taxable in Georgia only if: * It is deferred compensation (Ex. 401(k) distributions) * It was earned working in Georgia in a prior year. * The prior year's income is more than smaller of $5,000 or 5% of the total 2016 income from all sources.
Then the program just threw it all on me and said: You reported $x of taxable pensions and annuities on your federal return. How much of this amount is taxable in GA?
All the above conditions are true for me. The instructions thus seem to imply that my retirement income from my 401(k) and traditional IRA are taxable by GA and I owe big bucks.
However, I eventually found U.S. PUBLIC LAW 104–95—JAN. 10, 1996: "No State may impose an income tax on any retirement income of an individual who is not a resident or domiciliary of such State (as determined under the laws of such State)."
As a non-resident of GA for all of 2016 I think that says my 2016 retirement income is not taxable by GA, so all I have to do is answer "0" when the H&R Block Ga tax program asks me how much is taxable.
On re-reading the instructions I see that the conditions are *necessary* conditions, not *sufficient* conditions for tax-ability.
It would be helpful for H&R Block to rewrite the instructions to be more clear and take into account U.S. PUBLIC LAW 104–95—JAN. 10, 1996.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to fix issues, Easy to import, Fast
