I have used H&R Block software to do my taxes for years and I am satisfied with the software. It takes you through all the steps necessary to file a complete and accurate return.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
Purchased in December. I wanted to examine some numbers to determine the optimal differential tax rate for IRA withdrawal. The values were confusing/high, until I realized that if you didn't specify a portion of that amount to IRS, it would automatically increase your tax bill, unlike last year's edition. Also, once you go through the pages, it no longer navigates to form 8938, and you have to specifically point to that form. Also, you cannot add additional versions of that form, so it is necessary to print them out, and submit taxes via post office, rather than online.
tried to pay from your website. Kept getting hung up. Need to be very precise on whether numbers need dashes zeros etc. Kept getting phone number error msg i despite entering both phone nos that have been in use for years. Had entering problems last year also.
I have used this tax software for years so I am reasonably familiar with its interview protocol. There are some "glitches" which necessitate work-arounds, so it is important to carefully review the completed Schedules/forms to verify one's data has been entered correctly. If it hasn't, it can be a time consuming task to make necessary corrections. One notable error in the software has appeared for several years now: The software does not allow qualified charitable donations (QCD) from inherited IRA accounts, while the IRS clearly states this type of distribution is permitted.
