Weak rivets and uneven heat

I am struggling to get the entire griddle to heat properly. I have been unsuccessful in seasoning the griddle entirely. It seasoned well around the heating element areas but the outer edges of the griddle will not get hot enough to cook off the oil. Additionally, the heat shield completely broke off while I was putting it together. The rivets fell right apart on each corner. I really want to love this, but my first impression is just, meh.
