It is the only virtually waterproof GMRS mobile radio out there. The Mic is attachment is heavy duty not like the cheap overgrown phone cord attachment like most. Plus it is simple to operate. Your novice family members will have no problem operating this radio. It is hard to accidentally mess up the settings.

Just received my new Midland MXT500. Very Pleased with the product having done allot of research. Programing the MXT500 both manually and programing software was more easy than I thought it would be (a Plus) I like simple, one of the reasons I bought the MXT500. For now am using it as a Base Station with a power supply. Eventually I will install it in my Sierra but for now and enjoying it as a base.
