I have been a radio hobbyist most of my life and owned many brands and models of radios, including several other Micro Mobile radios. The MXT500 is a fantastic unit that I would recommend to anyone. It has plenty of power, great audio quality and while very easy for new/novice operators to use, it has plenty of features to keep the advanced users very happy.
I mounted this radio in an offroad vehicle for trail use. The weather resistance is fantastic, with snug weather-pack style connectors for power and a sealed mic connector, not having to worry about moisture or dust getting into the radio while enjoying the mountains or desert is a huge plus.
With the wideband FM now featured in this radio, I get great audio reports when using the local repeaters, and with the radio matched to the repeater's bandwidth, the receive quality is much better than previous models.
For some more advanced users, features such as Split-Tones and additional programmable memories that actually allow you to transmit on the GMRS frequencies is wonderful. The programing software make light work of custom setup, too.
Purchased this radio and installed it inside my side by side. The only 50W GMRS radio out with IP66 rating. Very easy to install and use. Speaker is loud and clear, build quality is also top notch. Repeater and wide and capable. I also like that I can change the screen color to match my interior lighting.
Picked up this radio a couple weeks ago, got it installed in my 2021 Rubicon 392, and I'm very satisfied with it's size, looks, and performance. Heave gauge wiring, and solid mount. I was all over the dunes with my Jeep group this weekend, and never lost communication even when we were spread out all over!
This thing is an absolute beast. I've used this to communicate with others as far as 35miles so far and the communication was crispy clear. This of course was with another matching 50w radio and us elevated up on a mountainside to achieve proper line of sight. There's tons of features packed into this device even down to multiple display colors! Highly recommend this model if you're looking for a quality device from a quality brand.
Two features that are key for me are the split-tones for our local repeaters, the 50w power, and the IP66 rating. The radio sits high inside the cab of my Jeep and gets punished with dust and sometimes water. I have destroyed two radios in the past but this IP rating should keep the MXT500 working for years.
Radio has excellent range with the 50 watts of power, audio loudness is perfect for vehicles with more wind noise or larger offroad tires. The weather channel features is priceless when weather is moving in and no cell coverage is available. Install was pretty straight foward, unit size is pretty compact for how powerful it is and paired with the 6db antennna for the best performance.
