I bought this to replace a unit left by the previous homeowner (no password provided). The existing cameras (8 total) worked fine when I plugged them into this replacement unit. Great picture quality. Can't tell the unit is refurbished. Good price and fast shipping.

We have owned the night our security system for several years, we are on our third system. The last system that finally wore out this week we purchased in 2017 and utilized The night owl HD app. I utilize an old tablet as a monitor in my work area so that I can see when I have deliveries. The tablet is mounted and displayed my four primary cameras throughout the day uninterrupted. It is too far from the system itself to use a cable to have the normal monitoring. This app is absolutely useless for a constant monitoring. It shuts down right at the most inapt time and then takes forever going through all the steps to get it back up and running again. Basically this app is made my system useless for my every day use and is making me reconsider night owls system.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not so great features

I have this equipment for 3 weeks now and there are some features to improve: definitely the App; besides not so user friendly it doesn’t respond fast enough when want to have access for a quick view or to check a sensor alert. Also I have to close it totally very often to make it respond and load the cameras. The other not so good features are the cameras speakers and the siren. Those aren’t good quality and hard to understand the prerecorded message or when having a conversation by the two way audio cameras.
On the other hand, the good things it has are the good quality video of the cameras and the no need to have a tv or monitor connected to set up the system.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very easy to setup, but the laggy video playback from the app and mobile app is very annoying. The picture is much wider than my older camera system, the picture from 1080p to 4K is about the same maybe a tad sharper. I just can't for the life of me figure out the lag issues. I have a 1G internet connection, I stream 4K movies on multiple devices all the time with zero issues. The Windows app is severely lacking in features and being able to change network settings or anything like that. Not even sure there is web gui built into the DVR to tweak it to maybe get rid of the lag? I am on the fence of ripping it all out and going back to my old camera system, if I can't rid the device of the lag. That is just unacceptable for the price you're paying for these cameras.

Great System, Easy Setup and Install.

We purchased our system yesterday (02 Jun 2023). This is our third Night Owl system. First one took a beating from Hurricane Michael in 2018 and survived, with a loss of 2 out of 8 cameras, the DVR eventually died. Our second one the motherboard fried after we took a lightening hit 3 weeks ago, turned out our surge protector was no longer protecting, it was now a fancy extension cord. Not an Night Owl issue, so check your surge suppressors out regularly to prevent having your system damaged.
Now to the new system. Connected everything up, inside the house, and the system booted right up, did its firmware update, then walked me through the setup with screen prompts (Have a monitor hooked up to it). Had zero issues with the setup/install. Deleted the old phone app (Android) and installed the new app, it was easy to setup and within minutes the system was up and running, both on the phone and in the house.
A time saving surprise for us was our existing cameras were compatible, so leaving them, gave us spare cameras, which is awesome.
With any technology you're bound to have issues, no company has 100% issue free products. Also something that is running nonstop for years is bound to wear out eventually. That said ALL of our Night Owl products have been awesome, and worked right out of the box, on the rare occasion we needed customer support we've had no issues with them.
Over the years our Night Owl systems have caught people breaking into cars, accidents, vandalism, kids sneaking in and out. It has given us peace of mind, security, and safety. Can't ask for more, so maybe I'm bias, but I've loved ALL our Night Owl systems. I look forward to many years of continued peace of mind and security with our new system.

This 8-camera system is working great. Installation was easy, software was intuitive and the I-Phone app works great. This is my 2nd Night Owl system, 1 16-channel for house and 1 8-channel for the barn.
