An Adventurer's Tale
on May 21, 2024

A really great set with cool minifigures (with alternative heads in most cases). The beasts are well represented with the owl bear, the beholder, as well as the titular Dragon. My only problem with the set is that the Dragon is not easy to display on the set.

Great set!

I woke up at 5 minutes to midnight on 3/31 to get this, even though I had to drive 600 miles at 5 am the next day. I made sure all my info was correct prior to the purchase, because I did t want a simple mistake on my part to ruin this once in a lifetime opportunity!

Complex thoughts

First of all, this is my first official review of a LEGO product, I have never had enough to say to write one before. This set, on the other hand, finally inspired me to write this. To get the easy stuff out of the way, yes, it’s too expensive. Yes, it should have come with the manual. Yes, the stickers look sloppy because the colors aren’t matched well. But my biggest concern here is with the build. Now, I’m not a professional or anything, but I’ve built a lot of sets in my time. And never in my life has a LEGO set had me scratching my head why they built something this way. Trust me when I tell you that building this thing is like a DnD campaign. You get an idea of what the result is supposed to be, but every step leaves you questioning how the heck you are supposed to get there. When you reach the end, you get a model that has unnecessary extensions to the base that make it harder to find space for, full of frankly weird building techniques and really fun Easter eggs. If you miss a step and have to go back, trust me, I did it too. The instructions have very little rhyme or reason, and some parts look unfinished. Honestly I think they just needed to quality control this one a tad more before sending it out. Some sections are flushed out and beautiful and some are just… exposed plate with no decor? It’s really quite odd. Also, there’s very little direction about how to pose things in this model, especially Cinderhowl the Red Dragon herself. The way that the 360 degree spin shows her placed on the tower is different than the way used on the box, and neither are that intuitive. We needed specific placement information in the instructions itself. I don’t regret buying this set, there’s enough here to really like, but as a LEGO enthusiast, I honestly believe you guys just sent this one to print a bit too quickly. The build is not up to the LEGO standard I have come to expect from you. The instructions are messy and lack a lot of clarity when it comes to model placement. The stickers don’t match the color of the pieces they are on. The minifigures and monster builds are excellent, and the Easter eggs and wealth of weapons and treasures found in this set are truly awesome. I just think you guys put way more effort into that than you put into the actual build. Thanks for reading!
(P.S. Here are some photos of the result of an hour of me trying to figure out how to set the dragon on the tower like the 360 spin video shows(the secret is the wings))

Dwarves

Official instructions show not to give the beard to the dwarf if you choose to make them female. This is a mistake because everyone knows even female dwarves have long beards

A nice set. Good mix of buildings. Nice choice of mini figs. Neck of the dragon could be a little longer.

The imagination toy and the imagination game!

This is a massive LEGO set. You get the equivalent of about four large scale sets in one box. Three of them interlock and one of them is a massive dragon.
But wait! There’s more! You can actually use this set with an accompanying adventure module to play a DND one-shot based around it. There’s even an actual play of it on YouTube and it appears appropriate for players of all ages and skill levels.
It’s expensive but well worth it.
I do want to add, however, that mine did miss a single piece. I may have misplaced it but try as I might, I could not find it anywhere. Fortunately, LEGO sent me a replacement and I was able to finish building.

Funtastical Build

As an AFOL, a D&D player, and a dragon lover, I had to have this. I normally go for builds that aren't houses or castles, but this was so much better than the straight lines that most of those are. They kept it interesting by varying the build with rocks and having mini monster builds in-between. Nothing repetitive here. My only slight disappointment is they made it a red dragon instead of the green (my favorite color and enemy choice) the original Ideas build had. But I do understand the choice. Great fun, hidden gems (literally) and playability options not just with their campaign. A must have.
