Great battery life
on January 3, 2024

The main reason to get this device was battery life. And it definitely delivers.
I can go for over a week of heavy riding without charging it, and the charging is really fast too.
The screen is very responsive even with full finger gloves.
I still wish that Garmin sorted out the Strava live segment limit, since it's one of the features I like to use the most, and they could also support multiple segments at once.

Solid cycling computer

Use it on my mountain bike and gravel bike. Took a little time to get use tot the interface but afterwards it was perfect for what I was using it for. The map function works great for riding in new areas or following a route for a race.

Night & Day vs. the 530

840 Solar OS is way more efficient than the previous generation. Of course I love the touchscreen & the many benefits of it, but even navigating thru out profiles, menus and training workouts is so much easier with this OS. I also have to mention the connectivity to my garmin pedals and lights is more stable with the 840 than the 530. Solar option is great to know you have it, but I don't really notice or track it. I'm a big fan of being able to manipulate data screens on my phone vs. doing it on the 530 itself.

Amazing

Upgrade from the Edge 1000 and I couldn't be happier. One of my favourite features is the climb detect where you see everything that's coming on any climb; distance, grade, you get a profile of the climb and where you are on it.

Superb Features

I love how easy and interactive the device is. It's very self intuitive and the display is very easy to read! If you currently have Garmin Connect, you can set up your Edge 840 that way and is relatively quick to setup. If you're familiar with its predecessor, this is similar but with more cool features and if you're a numbers type of person, this is definitely for you!

The 840 solar was an upgrade and replacement for my lost 820. I love all the features so far and I've only scratched the surface. I'm giving 4 stars because I'm not impressed with the solar feature for charging. I'm mainly a mountain biker so I knew I wasn't going to get much in the woods but at a recent MTB race, I left it on the handlebar mount for a few hours, in what I thought was direct sunlight (no clouds, sun beating hot and bright, July in NJ), and I was only successful in draining the battery. Perhaps I don't know enough about the solar aspect yet. I would love to hear other suggestions. But otherwise, I love this unit. Touch screen works well for me. Buttons are a slight struggle in the a silicone case but that's just me adjusting to a new unit.

Fantastic Computer

Love this computer. Moved over to the Garmin ecosystem and I've loved getting the training recommendations and using all the features like Climb Pro. The solar charging is definitely worth the extra spend and makes it so you don't have to worry as often about charging your computer. I went from charging my last computer 2x per week to now where I could probably go 2 weeks without charging. All in all, a fanstastic device. Just make sure you take some time to get acquainted with all the features (lots of videos on YouTube).

Excellent but...

It's actually awesome. I got it to upgrade my beloved edge 830.
I haven't tested all the functions, but so far, I really like it. You immediately notice the improvement on the touch screen, much more precise and more accurate than the 830. It works faster too. Some functions like adress search work in a little different steps but easy to get used to. Pairing with sensors is faster and more stable connection (power meter, speedometer, lights, heart rate monitor).
Solar panel works fine too. It won't charge your unit fully but it definitely extends the battery. The only thing I don't like is the virtual partner, there's no way to deactivate... same as intbe other models. The screen is not too big so it does take precious map room. I'd still 100% reccomend it.
