Best features worst platform

I’ve owned all the head units and used them extensively. My mainstay the last several years has been the Karoo but I wanted something more compact and with better battery life. The Karoo won’t last long enough for unbound. So I went with the new 840 solar. I’ll summarize it as, the operating system, responsiveness and usability is atrocious. It reeks of early smart phone era. Once you start to get familiar there are tons of subtleties no other head units have tho.

Amazing Upgrade

I purchased this about 2 weeks ago and haven't regretted it. Unlike my Edge 510 which has taken to dying after about 30 miles of navigation, this one only lost about 15% in a 65+ mile ride. I gained about 10-15 minutes of ride time over the 4 hours of mostly sun.

Great Upgrade

So, I'm an over 25-year member of the Garmin ecosystem. This is a huge upgrade, new features, and a great new screen. I thought the 830 screen was cool, but this is so much better again. Bluetooth connection seems rock solid so far. Thank you Garmin

Great headunit

I picked the 840 Solar up from my LBS when they got them in stock, I’m coming from an 840 and the changes are small but welcome, the UI is easier to navigate and laid out a bit better, the font is a little bigger/bolder so it’s easier to catch at a glance, the solar charging is neat and having the option to use buttons is frankly huge.

Have your phone as a backup.

Purchased a few weeks ago and took it on a 96 mile gravel ride Saturday. The GPS Course directions failed us three times in rural, yet established, small towns along the way. iPhone to the rescue.

Not enough memory

Bought a 1040 Solar and a 840 Solar. The 1040 is great with enough memory and more. The 840 right from the get go prompted me to delete maps for regular software upgrade! That’s disappointing!

OK, but lots of room for improvements

Negatives: horrible GUI; useless default screens; Power screen gets interrupted by hill screen; Solar screen is not worth the diminished visibility; huge bezel with nothing printed (how about labeling the button functions - I'm all the time hitting the lap button by mistake).
