Outstanding Device

It does an outstanding job that all bike computers do. I am still finding new aspects of the device. The alert to eat or drink is really useful on longer rides. The solar is not as efficient as some their other devices. Still is nice to have a little extra charge to get home.

Edge 840 Solar

I picked up an 840 Solar after losing my Edge 830. One of my biggest needs is battery life [rides 24+ hours happen at least a couple times a year]. The 830 allowed me to turn of the screen and the battery lasted a very long time. The 840 does not, so even with solar charging, it gets depleted much, much faster.
Aside from the lack of that one functionality, it is a very good device.

The best cycling computer

I've got Edge 840 Solar from my wife as a present. I've previously used other cycling computers and phone. The Edge 840 Solar is simply fantastic. I combines the best of both worlds with buttons (easy to use in winter gloves) and touchscreen (easy to navigate map). The number of features and screens - well, I have not learned all of them yet. However, even with out of box settings - it already setup perfectly and been useful from the day 1.

Great battery life

The main reason to get this device was battery life. And it definitely delivers.
I can go for over a week of heavy riding without charging it, and the charging is really fast too.
The screen is very responsive even with full finger gloves.
I still wish that Garmin sorted out the Strava live segment limit, since it's one of the features I like to use the most, and they could also support multiple segments at once.

Solid cycling computer

Use it on my mountain bike and gravel bike. Took a little time to get use tot the interface but afterwards it was perfect for what I was using it for. The map function works great for riding in new areas or following a route for a race.

Night & Day vs. the 530

840 Solar OS is way more efficient than the previous generation. Of course I love the touchscreen & the many benefits of it, but even navigating thru out profiles, menus and training workouts is so much easier with this OS. I also have to mention the connectivity to my garmin pedals and lights is more stable with the 840 than the 530. Solar option is great to know you have it, but I don't really notice or track it. I'm a big fan of being able to manipulate data screens on my phone vs. doing it on the 530 itself.

Not intuitive to set up. Need help

I used this for the first time and it kept shutting off throughout my first ride. The problem with that was it stopped engaging with my Garmin radar and was a bit dangerous.

Great improvements

I think the option to have both the buttons and touch screen is a great option…especially during a race or riding singletrack. The UI is a nice an improvement with the added colors and features.
