I love it! The only struggles for me are things I just need to learn to do. Like import routes from strava, and to turn off certain notifications. Like segments and KOM alerts.

Should've bought the Solar
on August 30, 2023

Love the size, customability, graphics, and tie in to my Garmin watch & app. But, due to the excellent navigation, it drains the battery. I ride about 2-4 hours per day, 6x per week and sometimes in sub 40°F weather. I feel like I should charge up the device daily. Buying the Solar version would give me a little peace of mind, knowing that if I forgot to charge, the Sun will at least save my ride record until I get home.
The takeaway: if you ride daily or long, think about the Solar...you don't want to miss a PR or a KOM!

Great little motivator

I upgraded from my older Edge 530, and this has been a great upgrade. Aside from the buttons and touch control, the automatic Climb Pro is one of the great new features of this series. I have also had better luck with this unit keeping ANT+ from dropping, and minor inconvenience that plagued the 530. I'm using this on 3 bikes, and couldn't be happier. It's a worthwhile upgrade from the x30 series.

Waiting for a better display
on August 9, 2023

Love my 840. Solar version just doesn't seem worth it for 99% of users. Screen is very responsive and battery has been great despite having the brightness all the way up and backlight set to always on. Still lasts through a 5hr ride with 40% or so left. For longer use I would change the backlight setting. USB C charging is very much appreciated, thank you Garmin. My one and only complaint is the display. I feel it's lacking in clarity and colour. An Amoled display would of course change the battery life, but I would sacrifice that any day for a bright clear display!

Small leaps forward
on August 1, 2023

I like the shape and feel of the new 840. It's also nice to have buttons and a touchscreen, but honestly I never use the buttons. The new AI is interesting GPS strength is better. The battery life is better.
What I don't like is that the features aren't necessarily any better, just different or harder to find on a new UI. The touchscreen is not much better, it's still hard to flip right or left while riding. The new UI packs too much on a screen that is the same size. There is a ton of wasted space on the borders of the screen. Screen could have been bigger/unit smaller. You still can't see a strava segment while navigating. It's harder to start/stop and discard rides you don't want to save. The constant "are you sure you want to stop" signals drive me absolutely bonkers. The re-routing doesn't always work also or you get stuck in loops where you can't stop navigating and you have to listen to the device beep like crazy as it thinks you are lost. When you are off course and want to stop navigation, it only let's you pause. You have to start a new course and then stop the navigation from there. Super buggy.
Maybe a 5% leap forward vs. the old model. Not enough to justify the spend. I'm really disappointed the Strava features aren't more developed. How am I supposed to snipe segments if I can't find them and or then navigate them?
I see this as maybe a 5%

Great upgrade

This is the fastest Garmin I've ever had. Route calculations are much faster and the navigation is snappier. I'm still getting used to the option of the extra navigation buttons over the 830 but it's been amazing so far.

This bundle really allows you to step up your training. Paired with the rally power meter pedals it gives you all the info you need to train like a pro. Set up is super easy. The computer itself is intuitive and easy to use.
