A good device overall.

Upgraded from my Edge 500 adding color, maps, touch screen and longer battery life. Lots of new metrics to monitor that can be tailored to anyone's training regimen. It's great that you can upload courses then call them up to re-ride at will. Main con is the menu structure. It is too deep and should be documented in a flow chart format to make it easier to learn and less complicated to reach the desired screen. Touch feature is nice but it's almost impossible to modify or find a feature unless you stop your ride to explore the submenus. Would be nice if the display defaulted to the home screen after a non-interactive period of time so you don't get lost in the menus. First ride, I couldn't find the home screen so ended up stopping and starting the ride, splitting the course into 4 separate events. Last ride, I wanted to make the screen brighter and stop the auto-scroll but wouldn't take the chance of losing the ride data again. I'm techy but this will take a while to learn.

The Best Cycling Computer!
on September 17, 2023

The Garmin Edge 840 is amazing! The touch screen, accuracy, turn-by-turn guidance, ease of use and more make this the best cycling computer on the market today. My favorite feature is Livetrack that sends notifications to my family while I'm riding. I paired the 840 up with a Garmin Vario radar/light -- this was a huge game-changer, and gives me peace of mind while riding on both city streets and country roads. I highly recommend the Garmin Edge 840.

Overall love the additional data collected and the UX is getting better. That said, this thing is less bright than the previous 830.

An informative tool that enhances any ride!

I purchased this version to replace other devices (3rd patry cycling/fitness apps & multifunction watches) and incorporate its ability to interact with multiple devices.
Instructions & setup was straightforward. Using it was equally simple and it delivers as advertised.

I bought this a month ago. I use it on road bike rides with other people and also use it on single track. It’s the first bike computer I’ve owned and i like it a lot. Took a minute to figure out how to start it… Had to use YouTube to find out how to move the information around on the screen. I also bought the light/radar combo. My only complaint is the computer doesn’t pick up my heart rate from my Garmin watch. Perhaps someone knows how to link them.

Great cycling computer overall!

This computer was an upgrade from my edge 130, and it hasn't disappointed! Map feature works great and it connects to satellite as well as my devices without a hitch. Super fast to load and be ready to go. My only niggle with the device is that the gradient feature has too much lag. It doesn't impact my ride, but I tend to enjoy the data as it comes but it's clear that the slopes are delayed in a meaningful way. Certainly not a reason not to buy it, but don't expect real time slope data. Other than that the hill climb data has been fun, it picks up hill's immediately all around me, with more time I think this feature can be pretty useful! I was torn between this and the wahoo, I'm not disappointed with the Garmin, touch screen makes it super easy to use (definitely spring for the 840, would be tough with just buttons) it gives me tons of data and let's me set up separate displays for all my bikes. Easy to use and a fun asset! Would definitely buy again.

If you are a cyclist, and ride alone or are ever looking to change up your routes, this bike computer is for you. The maps are incredibly helpful and the data is great for improving your rides.
I recommend this over the 500 series as it comes with a touch screen making navigation easier. I also love how it pairs with my Di2 shifting so I can control the computer from the hoods of my handlebars. You can also share routes with friends and track so much with it.
The only possible downside would be the screen is certainly smaller than the 1000 series computers. The battery life is great but if you are someone who goes on longer rides, multiple times a week or are in to bike-packing I may recommend going with a solar option.
