Love this little wonder

I bought this concerned about being able to read on the road. I can report I have no issues. You can adjust the font size and also controlling the amount of data per screen also affects font size. Has more features than I will use. Very intuitive to navigate once you understand the buttons and have a chance to play with.

Why did I wait

Having the 840 attached to handlebars is a game changer. The stats of my ride are quickly viewable. The map is spot on. The ease of use is exactly as advertised. Another bonus is it can be taken on & off and then placed on another bike. One thing I need to complete the package is a heart monitor. Which I just purchased.

RADICAL Improvement over the Edge 830! THANK YOU!

STAMINA? YES! Seems valuable already! Navigation? SO much more intuitive, very quick to adapt and lock in on an alternative when I choose a different direction, (sometimes wants to take a route back on track sooner than I will accept, including trails or "roads" that aren't acceptable, but I just ignore that and it adapts again as soon as that option has passed.) Small changes or big ones, both have worked out just great without me being hassled constantly about "Off Course." GPS is MUCH MORE ACCURATE than the 830. One course on a paved road has ALWAYS with the 830 given SEVERAL "OFF COURSE" warnings even though I'm right on the road. Ridiculous miscalculations anytime I used a course on that road. I did it with the 840 right away after getting it only a couple weeks ago. It never missed a beat or thought I was off at any point. SCREEN QUALITY VASTLY BETTER with the 840. It's like it healed my OLD EYES! I can actually barely read the small print stuff now, like where it shows what the data field is just above the actual data. I could never see that stuff on my 830, struggled to read lots of things like that. I could see the data itself, like the distance or time or power, but not any of the fine print stuff. Even though the 840 is supposedly the same resolution, it is MUCH EASIER for me to read almost anything even without the reading glasses I would otherwise need. BATTERY LIFE? Well, suffice to say, it is a big improvement for me so far. I tend to stay well charged up on both my EDGE and my FENIX 6, just because I might choose to do a 4 or 5 or even 7 hour ride the next day on short notice. I always try to be prepared. But the 840 has me letting recharges lag more and more because it stay so high even after a few hours ride. I even increased the backlighting to ALWAYS and raised the Brightness to about 70% because I know the battery will last and the AutoBrightness always seems to dim it just a bit too low for my eyes. (I might have been happier with the 830 in that regard had I dared to force the brightness higher, but I never tried it that high; but even if I had, the battery life would have become an issue at times.) ALL THE BUTTONS is a HUGE PLUS!!! There have been MANY times on the 830 that I couldn't change the screen because I was wearing thick gloves that were not "touch screen" friendly, or because it was raining and the wet screen wouldn't respond. Now with the Up Down buttons on the side, it is possible even in the worst conditions! The buttons are a little less sensitive than I would like, but I'm learning to press a little higher on the buttons than from side/slightly below and that seems to work much better. Still getting used to what works best. There is a little downside to having so many buttons because you do have to watch how you hold the device when pressing (OR when NOT TRYING to press them, like when removing it from the bike mount, and the screen isn't locked, you can accidentally press a button, especially the lower corners, without meaning to,) but I'm also learning how to avoid the problem as I use it. KEEP THE BUTTONS ALWAYS, GARMIN! They are a HUGE ADDITION to functionality and usability. OVERALL FITNESS DEVICE? I am FAR more content with the EDGE 840 becoming my PRIMARY TRAINING DEVICE now. I had to dance back and forth with using the FENIX 6 and the EDGE 830 to dual-record all rides, then check their results, and then delete one or the other recording AFTER making sure the data was okay. The 830 was failing during rides, rebooting, losing data in the process, etc. Not always, but enough that I always had to have a backup device. I still do that, but now, I'm much more confident that the EDGE 840 will have intact, accurate data, AND with the STAMINA factor included, I feel confident that it's the more useful reference over the long haul. The only thing it doesn't record that the FENIX 6 does is the Recovery HR (I would love it if that were possible, GARMIN!) but the STAMINA feature seems like something I want to see every ride and be able to start seeing trends over time, like how low I can drain it and what that leads to in future days. All in all, this device has RAISED MY OPINION OF GARMIN a HUGE AMOUNT! It still needs to be dependable over time, and I did have about 2 or 3 unexpected things in the first couple days, a freeze-up of the device after a Garmin Express update, and a couple reboots that came from nowhere BUT these did not happen during rides, and cleared up just fine. I hope they were just "growing (birthing?) pains" of a brand new device. :-) I've recorded 13 rides with the device so far, and all have been flawless as far as I could see. And USING the device on rides is BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE. I'm like, WOW! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!

Lots of info, works well but hard to silence

Very nice display. UI is a bit clunky. Took a few rides to stop it from constantly beeping at me and changing screens. Hopefully once set up, it won't be as distracting (settings are both in device and profile). Battery seems nice and the overall Garmin ecosystem integrates well. Deducting a star for UI and overzealous notifications. Time will tell if it is built well.

New addition to my Garmin family

I picked up a new Edge 840 as a replacement for a lost Edge 520. I gotta say that this new device has been a tremendous improvement over the 520, in every way. I love the option of buttons and/or touch screen. The menu is much easier to navigate. The sensors picked up immediately (I never did get them to connect on the 520). The wi-go upload is super. The form factor is roughly the same, but the 840 feels much more substantial. I recorded thousands of miles on the 520 and hope to continue with the 840.

I love that it came with mounting solutions.

The GPS unit came with three mounting solutions to the bounce of the unit is on top of the handlebars in one out front. So I am able to have it on a stationary bike, My mountain bike, and a road bike. Without even having to buy more mounting stuff.

Finally replaced my 820

The battery life on my ol’ 820 was getting really bad. It was to the point where I would outride it most of the time, especially if it was cold out. I would run a cable to a power supply, but that’s kinda lame. It served me well. Kinda wish, no I really wish, the battery was replaceable. Oh well. The new 840 is pretty rad. I didn’t like that it was bigger at first, but now like it because it is. Bigger. I still don’t use many of the fancy gizmos, but really like the grade (kinda lags but whatever) and how it guesses what climb I’m on. Easy to plot rides from the device. Knows local climbs. All awesome. Before I would never change what kind of ride I was on, road, dirt, or mtb. Too many swipes away in some menu. Now that’s super easy to select so I’ll be doing that. The mtb setting tracks my flow and grit??? What the heck? Garmin says a grit score of 40+ is a hard ride. My first ride was a 251. What does a 251 grits get me? Yeah that’s all turned off now. Awesome little unit. Glad I got it. Wish I could have replaced the battery on the 820. You should get one.
