Disappointed

Easy to set up. My internet download speed is 62Mbs, I've been trying to download a 1.8 hour movie for over 36 hours - only 30% completed.
I will try to return tomorrow.

I love the 4K player since day one
on March 30, 2014

I have been using the device with 65 inch 4K since last summer. I find the storage and delivery to be perfect. I love how FAST the interface is ready when you press the one button on the remote. It is brilliant. Do not listen to the whining on this. This is exactly the way I want TV to work. (Next, Sony will produce a TV that can fully preserve cable/satellite settings for people who have no clue. You know, the provider changes something and the no-clue person must have help for a reset). Last summer there were issues with paying for movies. The system required ultra security for credit card. To get on with it, I had to pay in advance before I went shopping... and I hate it when I am periodically prompted for security codes. I have yet to try a simple charge it to my card purchase since all the fuss. Since I hate the commercial pay system required to fill a "wallet", I really want the credit card security perfected.
I have loved the free stuff and most of the movies that I bought. I love the quality of the old and the new. My favorite so far was "American Hustle." Spectacular 4k quality, plus the film is brilliant. The Clark Gable movie is fantastic in 4K. Other than security delays, I love everything about the player. Waiting for download is not a problem if you buy, ...if you rent, I would prefer a system that lets you download now and view at your convenience. I can see why one should pay up front for that privilege to wait to view. Just a month would do it for me. I don't want to download and have to view within a couple days. No one's schedule is protected enough for that.
I am filling up the player. I want Sony to suggest precisely how I should expand the capacity. Should I buy a hard disk from Sony? Should I wait for a specific new device that will include improvements? Please advise the first generation users Sony!

Good idea from Sony.

Verified Purchase:Yes
Not enough content. When I spoke to the guy when I bought it from Sony's website he said every movie that was released would be on the media player. But it is only Sony movies so it limit your movie experience. There is not enough for 4k movies. The movies look fantastic in 4k. 400 for media player not worth the money. Pay $4000 for my TV. Just not enough 4k content. when I buy it again. Most likely not.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not Compatible With Other 4K Receivers
on July 27, 2014
Posted by: Nadarko
I have a professionally installed 5.2 Klipsch Reference Speaker system, Pioneer Elite SC-77 Audio/Video Receiver, PS4 for my Blue Ray Player, DirecTV and recently upgraded to Sony XBR65X850B. Best Buy told us that the Media Player was being upgraded and was offered on pre-order with a $200 discount and we placed our order. WARNING this unit is not compatible with non-Sony Audio/Video Receivers. The HDMI cable from the Media Player must be run directly to a 4K Compatible HDMI Port 2 in Sony XBR65X850B and then a separate audio only HDMI cable from the Media Player to your Audio Video Receiver to receive sound. My HDTV is hung above my fireplace and only has one HDMI cable run to it, since I use my AV Receiver as the switcher between inputs, therefore the Sony Media Player is not compatible with my setup. Sony makes a big point that this player is compatible with only Sony 4K HDTVs and should make a similar point that it is only compatible with Sony 4k Audio/Video Receivers. I doubt anyone spending the money for a 4K HDTV system will want to downgrade to a system that cannot utilize the Audio/Video Receiver as the switching hub for the Sony 4K Media Player. Sony's workaround requires you to run another cable to your HDTV and switch back and forth on inputs into your HDTV as well as your AV Receiver, which is a deal breaker for me. The Media Player works as advertised, but the reality of the current state of affairs is that virtually no originally produced 4K Media is available and all current media is upconverted to the 4K resolution being displayed on your Sony 4K HDTV, at this time allowing my Sony 4K HDTV to upconvert the raw video is good enough for me.

4k media player

I had the tech come to the house to upgrade the 4k TV. then tried to install the media player. Have not been able to get it working. I will have to call support again Monday. Ever the tech that upgraded the TV was unable to get it to work. I've never had this much trouble with a Sony product.

Sony® 4K Ultra FMP-X1 HD Media Player Front USB
on January 21, 2014
Posted by: Graphics
Sony® 4K Ultra FMP-X1 HD Media Player Front USB ports & SD Memory Card do not work.
If you plug in a flash drive the light on the flash drive lights up as well if as an example you plugged in a USB powered 500 gig hard drive or a 10gig memory flash drive; and that would be all of what happens. No place on the GUI of the Media Player or on the SONY 65 4K TV does the plugged in devices on the Media Player front ports show as if they are recognized on the TV GUI. The added USB port on the rear is recognized if you format the drive when you add an external drive. This port works just fine as I have transferred some content from the internal drive to the external drive to save space.
Strangely the faster USB front port is rated as a USB 3.0 port and the rear a USB 2.0 port – I assume and I hope that future software updates will active these two ports - or I will discover that this unit was defective since day one.
This disclaimer is on the SONY Web Site
The player does not detect the USB device connected to the player.
(This function is not available in some areas.)

Worst purchase ever. Sony audio does not work.

I have been working with Sony to get my pioneer sc71 receiver to work with the media box. I have this hooked up perfectly. When the hdmi port 2 is hooked to the receiver, the sound still comes out of tv and goes in and out. The few times that the receiver does get the sound, the sound goes in and out. No one from Sony knows what is going on.
