Bring on the Programming
on July 18, 2013

This companion server to the XBR65 makes for some really excellent 4K images, although some of the pre-packed films do not look any better than the Blu-ray equivalent, so that is disappointing. The control of the server (from TV remote) is a bit sluggish in changing the screen image, and slow in getting the counter display for running time before it disappears from screen.
The HDMI(1) carries video and audio and must be connected directly to the #4 input (modified on my) XBR. There is a second HDMI(2) for audio only, but selecting it removes audio from (1) ....so SONY if you build a TV with superior sound (which it has) why can't you make audio available at both HDMI outputs simultaneously? Is this something possible for a future update?
Overall, the FMP X1 brings the 4K television full circle, now bring on the programming!
What's great about it: Stunning quality on many of the feature films and shorts, powers on/off when selected as input
What's not so great: Two HDMI outputs should have audio available on both, NOT either/or
I would recommend this to a friend!

Regarding the questions in the comments section.... Great questions! This media player will play 4K. As of right now, we cannot upload or stream via an external HDD connected to this media player and due to copyright issues, we cannot transfer movies from the Media Server to an external HDD. We cannot comment on 8K or h.265 at this time. Thanks!

Thanks for your feedback and your suggestion about making audio available at both HDMI outputs! Stay tuned for more 4K content :)

Really Sony???

So at time of launch I purchased the Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K mainly based on Sony demos showing 4K clips including The Amazing Spiderman. We were all told Sony was planning to release a 4K server which would allow us to see 4K on it. Well, over a year later the FMP-X1 is here and guess what? It is NOT compatible with the 1000ES! How fair is that? We invested in your new technology only to be left out. The 1000ES is $25,000! We have been waiting to see true native 4K movies which were demonstrated on it at all the shows. We are planning to buy a couple 4K TVs this fall but at this point they won't be Sony. It is not fair for you to change the rules as you go. There is going to be a 90% return rate of X1. This needs to be resolved immediately. Sony needs to support those that have supported them...
What's great about it: Native 4K Resolution
What's not so great: Doesn't work with other 4K TVs including Sony's other 4K models

Thank you for your feedback. We highly value our first in-home 4K customers, those who have the VPL-VW1000ES, the first 4K projector designed for the home theater and are currently developing a solution path to provide in-home, native 4K content for those customers. We anticipate a public announcement of details to coincide with the launch of Video Unlimited 4K.

Bought it, Sony techs will come out in two weeks and set it up so hopefully it works. I tried the tech over the phone, forget that, it not compatible with the TV. really it was made for this TV. don't buy and think it will work out of the box, some will some won't, no rhyme or reason just the way it is. I will review again when it works in a couple of weeks.
What's great about it: Doesn't work
What's not so great: Cost

Thanks for your input. Not every Sony 4K UHD TV will require the free in-home premium service activation, in some instances the 4K TV can be immediately paired with the FMP-X1 right out of the box. Thank you for taking the time to visit www.4kactivation.com to confirm that your TV qualified for the activation.

Can not get audio
on October 24, 2013

The X1 works fine except I can not get audio from the X1 HDMI 2. I had my first one replaced and tried again and I got audio from the X1 HDMI 2 for about 20 minutes and it dropped out and did not come back again. Now I have to use the optical out of the TV set to get audio and it is only 2 channels. I even tried different receivers to see if my AVR was bad, still no audio out of the X1. I will just have to use the optical out on the back of the TV, no 5..1 audio for me.

Extremely slow downloads
on February 1, 2015

I have a 130MBps internet connection (well above your average internet speed) and a Gigabit Ethernet router, yet the best download speeds I could get when downloading a movie from the Sony entertainment network was at most 24Mbps with a wired LAN. This is very disappointing. I found out the media player dos not have a Gigabit LAN (it has a fast Ethernet instead), and it is restricting download speeds in my system dramatically. I can't believe that Sony has not installed a Gigabit Ethernet on the media player knowing how much information needs to be transferred with 4k content. A 40 minute Blacklist episode took 1:30hs to download, despite having state of the art internet and router. Quite disappointing for such an expensive player! Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the beautiful picture and quality of 4k content, but this media player is not up to what it should do at this price.

Hi ale1, Upon checking your inquiry. Depending on the amount of content and your network environment, it will often take about 4 times the running time of the content to complete a download. For example, it will take about nine hours to completely download a two-hour movie if the transmission speed is 10 Mbps on average. We regret that the player did not live up to your expectations.

A Pay-Per-View Box
on April 24, 2015

First, this is a box to rend / buy movies from. It is proprietary and therefore will have no long term support.
Second - It has extremely small mount of supported formats. Which means a lot of what you have video wise is probably not going to play on here.
Third - It's network cable interface / ethernet port is almost 15 years obsolete. I cant even remember the last time i saw 10/100 in a NEW device. This would be like buying a brand stereo for your car advertised as top of the line and it has only AM and a DIAL:)
Fourth - This has two USB 2.0 sockets. This is like buying a new car with two speakers. One for the front and WOW:) One for the rear!:)
Fifth - This is a device that was designed by someone sitting in an office who doesn't really know anything about this type of thing or really use this type of device.
You can do much better with an Android XBMC player like: Minix New X8 Plus or the Minix Neo X8-H

Need more 4K media/movies
Response from sony.comBy Scott Fuentes, Sony Support USA, September 5, 2013
Hi OldAndOldAndBustedHotness, Sony is more than an electronics innovator. We are leaders in 4K entertainment from production, through distribution, all the way to cinemas and into the living room. A major benefit and differentiator of buying a Sony 4K television is access to true 4K content thanks to our partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment. When Video Unlimited 4K launches later this summer, you should see more available content.

Not impressed
on July 21, 2014

Received this unit two days ago. The video resolution on my Sony xbr850A is not dramatic. I am not impressed either with the sound quality. I get a better picture watching youtube videos and up converted blu ray movies. The video options built into the TV are already extensive. This player has few viewing options and seems to be designed to sell old movies at inflated prices which are already available on netflix for free. You have to establish an account to even view free content. The connection scheme is really disappointing. You have to run a separate HDMI line from the player to a specific port on the TV for video, and another HDMI to the receiver for audio. In preparation for 4K I ran an HDMI and ethernet line in my wall where the TV is mounted. If that line must be used for video from the player then I will have to open the wall and run a second HDMI line to carry all my other inputs. If you try to run HDMI video thru the receiver as you would a cable box or blu ray player, the screen displays the message that HDCP 2.2 is required. I already purchased a new receiver with a 4K pass thru. That isn't good enough for this player The player also changes the TV's scene settings. I am returning it with much regret. This is Sony's second generation player. They should have done better than this.
