Wasted my money on Sony 4K media player
on November 24, 2014

Media player come with a hefty price tag, which come with very short film. When I bought FMP-X1 4K media player I thought it come with 10 full-length movies already installed but I was wrong. They said preloaded (which make me believe that it is ready to play right away) but I am wrong, I am unable to get it, I try many times with Sony customer service all they say that was a promotion and that is ended. Nobody is help full. I am trying to understand that why the media player is $699 when the only function it has is down load the movie from Sony network and then play it. On the other hand Netflix, you can stream the 4K movie directly to your Sony TV you do not need any 4k media player They should give everyone those 10 full-length movie just to justify the $699 price tag. A big loss of money will not recommend to any one.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi Sky250, thank you for your comment, we place a very high value on feedback from our customers because it allows us to continue to improve. Please refer to the links bellow for more information about the 10 free pre-loaded movie promotion and how to use the media player
Absolutely Horrible Product! Do not purchase this product! There are audio output issues with certain AV receivers. Just got off phone with Sony Support after 47 minutes and 5 departments they are unable to assist. They are well aware that the HDMI2 output for audio to a receiver does not work with Pioneer Elite or any other receiver other than Sony. There is no firmware update to fix this. And the 10 free movies that were included when I first looked at this product are a thing of the past. They are now giving this product away free with huge discounts on 4K TVs. In my opinion, Sony has simply pushed a product to market. When I called sony I was routed to five (5) departments, YES 5 , and the tech support people were NOT helpful at all. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Purchased along with my new 4k tv. TV was wall mounted, up and running in less than an hour. While trying to get the 4k player running, Sony installer was on phone with Sony mother ship for so long that his cell phone battery died. Installer left after about 90 minutes trying to set up 4k player and I was given an troubleshooting ref. number by Sony on phone and told to call back Monday to speak to higher level tech support. THREE HOURS later I solved the mystery. I have an ATT Uverse router to the wall. Netgear powerline ethernet from Uverse router to 4k player (14Mbps over powerline connection). Sony 55" 4k TV has wireless connection which installer hooked up to my wireless network running off an ASUS wireless router set up behind the Uverse router. 4k player will NOT run with TV and 4k player running off separate routers installed in series. When I moved powerline connection (4k player) to ASUS router it still did NOT work. So 4k player and TV on same router behind Uverse router does NOT work. On a whim, and dreading dealing with Sony level 3 tech support, I enabled the ATT Uverse router wireless networking and plugged the powerline into the Uverse router and all was good, 4k player worked and I was watching Bad Teacher in 4k!
Sony tech support might want to confirm TV and 4k player are running off same router right off the bat. Their installer spent quit a bit of time at our house trying to get it going and the first 2 levels of tech support wasted a couple of hours. FYI I use the ASUS router for wifi because it is faster than the wifi that comes on the stock ATT uverse router. I would imagine that the folks who buy 4k TV's at this point, might not have your typical home network setup.
Have been up and running a couple of days now and noticed 4k player was out at about 3am yesterday with 5xxx error message. Seems like you can't play 4k movies if the Sony network is down. 4k player seems to require constant connection with mother ship and will not operate as a stand alone. I guess that's why you guys in Korea can't bring the 4k player over there and get it running.

on August 7, 2014

I was real excited to get the new player after selling the old one. After spending 2 hours on the phone with Sony techs telling me its my internet service and resetting and rebooting everything, still NOT working. Sony said they would call me back with a fix...that was 2 days ago..?? Maybe someone can help. I have the X850A 65" and the player connected to HDMI4. The Netflix works great, streams, clear, unbelievable picture. My SEN account shows all mini movies I downloaded, all show in My 4k Videos, But when I click to play it says please wait then tells me server not available. It is NOT my server! They wont play after downloaded. HELP.......

Sony server works after tech visit
on August 7, 2013

As an early adopter, I was unaware that I would require scheduling "white glove 4K server setup". That said, they came and replaced the HDMI 4 port card (see photo) with version 2.2 on schedule and we were up and running! No snags, and they knew what they were doing. The shorts provided are of better quality than that of the actual movies? Maybe they aren't true 4K? A concern here is that the Sony gal seems to indicate perhaps another visit is required to realize the 4K download service??? I hope I'm wrong.
4K server works flawlessly as advertised !

What's great about it: provides true 4K source material
What's not so great: movie quality isn't as good as shorts provided
I would recommend this to a friend!

fldef, Not all X900A TVs required a service activation to work with the FMP-X1 media player. However, for those that do, only one activation is needed. Sony’s Video Unlimited 4K service is on schedule to go live later this summer. Best Regards

IF YOU WANT 4K NOW, IT'S WORTH IT

This product is more expensive than it should be considering it will probably be obsolete within a year or two. That said, if you want to have 4k video now this is about your only option. The device was very easy to set up and start using, and the video quality is absolutely gorgeous. Plugged it in, hdmi video cable into tv, hdmi audio cable into receiver, signed in and I was up and running in about 5-10 minutes flat. For the price, there should be at least a movie or two included and not just the short demo videos, and the selection of 4k movies is really limited and lackluster. I do hope they continue to add more and better selections. Elysium was already downloaded on the device, so after paying it was immediate ready for viewing. The audio through my receiver didn't work right away, but after playing 3-4 videos it kicked in. Not sure what the issue was, but it works now. Netflix also works fine but also has a very limited selection of 4k. The real drawback here is limited and poor content availability. If Sony and Netflix don't make it, you're not going to see it. Seemingly, Sony has a large catalog of great movies that would show off this device's capability. Here's hoping they start transferring them to 4k soon.

I'm on the Fence about this purchase!!

This is an O.K unit! It's not great like I was expecting it to be. I wanted to really compliment my new Sony 70" 4K TV with an awesome addition, and honestly my BDP-S6200 Blu-ray player fits the bill better. 1st,it has to plug in directly to the TV! I also purchased one of the new Denon 4K A/V 7.2 receivers also. The FMP won't work with any decent or high-end 4K receiver..(Audio only)...2nd, that seems like a lot of cash to spend on old movies and 2-4 minute short clips!! Had a choice between a 75" Samsung 4K and a 70" Sony 4K and I went with Sony of course. TV is absolutely stunning when paired with a PS4 or Xbox. The 3D is amazing also. I would ask Sony to continuously update the 4K content. Still I think Sony has more 4K content than Samsung on tap for premium buyers!
