It's good, but not great. Read why

Just received my bonfire today, and was super excited. After a long fire today, I like it, but am not as "in love" as I had hoped. As advertised, it lights fast & easy, burns burns hot and turns wood into ash. It's clean/non-smokey (IE not completely smokeless) but MUCH MUCH better in the smoke department than a chiminea, and of course it's a 360 setup vs the 90degree seating situation than I'm used to.
All that said, it's not quite what I'd hoped. Despite what I'd read, it doesn't throw real heat. In New England you are looking for warmpth fromy your fire, vs just flames. It really doesn't do the trick on a 30 degree night. That said, I expect it will be a wonderful cool night/summer fire pit for sure, so if you like burning in the winter and like the warmth, look elsewhere.
Another issue, and this is the big one for me is that I love looking AT the fire. It's mesmerizing watching flames coming off the wood, and the glowing embers as they change color. With this stove, unless you are looking down into the fire, all you see is the flame tips cresting the rim. It's mesmerizing if you're standing and looking in... but if just sitting back, having a beer and looking at the burn is your thing, this probably isn't for you.
I'm okay with my purchase, and look forward to the warmer months, knowing it can burn on my deck (thats awesome) but not sure it's going to become my go-to option all year round, and that is too bad considering the price.

Best fire ever

We fired up the bonfire this evening for the first time. It was easy to get a fire going because the wood burns so efficiently. It was a short time before we had a beautiful fire going. I'd read about the "beautiful flames" from the pit. I thought that claim was odd, but it's actually true. The pit channels the fire so we'll, and it is actually very pretty. Also, just so nice to be outside at dusk with moonrise and the first stars.

Worth It

Love this product. I always had a wood burning firepit but switch to propane for the convenience. It was lacking in comparison. The Solo Stove looked interesting because it has all the good of a wood pit with the ease of a propane. Couldn't be happier. No lingering smell on the clothes, portable, and easy to use. Only regret is I wish I had gotten the Yukon.

More Incinerator than Fire Pit
on January 24, 2021

I wanted a fire pit to use when entertaining friends during Covid social distancing. I had concerns about the double wall construction of the Bonfire restricting the radiation of heat, which is a primary benefit of a fire pit during cool/cold seasons. My concerns were confirmed on my first use of the pit. It directs all heat up and there is very little radiant heat around the device. The main source of heat is from logs that extend above the lip of the pit, or if you hold your hands above the lip of the pit. If you can see flames you will feel radiant heat. If you cannot see flames then you will not.
The pit also acts more as an incinerator than a fire pit. Efficient air flow maximizes the burn rate of your wood. Nice that it will efficiently burn the fuel down to ash, but it burns fuel very quickly and directs the heat up.
It is nice that once the fire burns down and settles below the rim of the pit you do not need to monitor it as closely, but you will feel colder without the direct heat from visible flames.
Getting a fire started is a bit of a challenge too. You’re lighting a fire in a high walled pit. Once the chimney draft from the foundation air holes starts to work then it burns nicely. But until that chimney action kicks in it is difficult to nurse your starter into a fire.
Low smoke is a nice feature, but it comes at a cost of low heat generation and fast fuel consumption. Seems like the kind of fire pit you’d want to use for a summer fire rather than for cool/cold weather, as I had planned to use it.

Works great. Get it going with quickly with good kindling, 5-10 mins. Using dry hardwood, it will pump heat with minimal smoke. Clothes don't smell afterwards.
