Even a kid from the burbs can do it
on August 13, 2020

Growing up in the burbs I only had to start a fire at summer camp and the occasional overnight. Needless to say even with a love of fire it was not a forte of mine. Now several years later I’m still no expert, but thankfully there is the solostove. This product is awesome, no hassle to start a fire and once it’s going it’s easy to keep it going as long as you need. Worth every penny.

Recently, a co-worker mentioned that they'd purchased a new Solo Stove for their deck and hearing that name, I recalled my having positive associations from the camping/cookstove domain. (I'd never used those types of stoves, but had heard good things from friends.)
I mentioned my desire to buy a Bonfrie to our budget director (aka my spouse) and she correctly asked me if I was so keen on building fires in a shiny new fire pit on the patio, why a perfectly good fire pit was on our patio already, having sat unused for a year or two.
It was a fair question and the best answer was that the existing fire pit (which I had to fill with sand for some if-not-the-ashes-will-corrode-the-junk-metal-it-was-built-with reason) was really difficult to get a fire started in.
No matter what kind of dryer lint + newspaper + cardboard + fatwood + sticks + kindling + firewood teepee/log cabin art project I'd craft, I'd be left with lots of unburned wood and, overall, a lot of smoke. Yes, it was a fire, but it was also a lot of work and not tons of fun once it was actually lit.
If I recall correctly, she rolled her eyes a little in response to my explanation and said, "Eh, if you want to get it, get it."
A day or so after I placed my Bonfire order(!), I found a local company that sells kiln-dried firewood, so I ordered a box.
Short version is that shortly after the Bonfire arrived, I took one of their little paraffin firestarters, lit it on fire with one match, put one piece of fatwood on top of the firestarter, and when that was going, I put one piece of kindling on top of that. When the kindling was going, I put a couple pieces of firewood on that and -- if I'm honest -- it was actually almost too easy. I never had the original-fire-pit fears that my fire was in constant danger of going out.
When that initial fire died down a bit ("halfway"?), I got some of the junky seasoned wood (which is literally pieces of a tree that I cut apart and stacked up a couple years ago) in the Bonfire and it lit right up. Basically, I think I could probably have thrown wet, green wood in the Bonfire and it would have burned.
I am so happy that I have a nice piece of equipment sitting on the patio that creates reliable and easy-to-make fun. We bought some vegan marshmallows and some telescoping marshmallow sticks (with glow-in-the-dark handles because why not?!) and next chance we get, we're gonna have a nice marshmallow roast!
I mentioned the above to my brother and how I kind of wish I'd gone with the Yukon (thanks to its size) and he said, "Well, if you decide you want to upgrade, let me know and I'll buy your Bonfire off you; it sounds great." :)
Thanks, Solo Stove!

Little did we know! Beautiful full flame, no smoke, fire lasted longer than we anticipated! Exceeded our expectations in every way. My husband and son couldn't stop talking about the engineering. Well done!
