Medela Freestyle Hands Free Pump Review

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Medela Freestyle Hands Free Double Electric Breast Pump is easy to use and a good option for mothers looking to relieve engorged breasts or build a freezer supply of milk over time. As an owner of the Medela Freestyle Flex model, I found this new pump model had many of the features I love with this brand. It was easy to assemble, use, and clean, with the added bonus of not needing to pair it with a hands free pumping bra to be able to move around while pumping. It was definitely more discreet in comparison to the Flex model however, as someone with smaller breasts (32C), I found the pump cups to be quite large for my bras and needed to make sure I was wearing something with an adjustable strap to get a good enough seal. Wearing the pump, I was able to complete activities within waist and shoulder height (e.g. tidy countertops) but was unable to complete any lower or higher activities (e.g. loading/unloading the dishwasher or laundry) without compromising the seal. Ultimately, I found that the plastic seal of the Hands Free pump was not as strong as the Flex’s silicone seal, leading to slightly less milk being expressed. Therefore, while I liked this pump, for mothers looking to increase their milk supply, this wouldn’t be my first choice, particularly for someone with smaller breasts. Overall, this is a great product with my favourite features being the few parts needed to assemble/transport. However, I’m looking forward to seeing this product evolve over time so that the discreet/portable features do not come at the price of compromising the suction/expression ability. Not worth the money

I’ve only had this pump for two months and it stopped working. I charged it accordingly and it shows a full charge and shuts off during use. The suction is subpar as well.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Please improve visibility

I wanted to love this pump so bad but unfortunately I have a few gripes after using it for a few weeks now. First- the cups are milky and don’t help with visibility. I cannot tell if the nipple is positioned right in the shield or if the milk has begun to flow so I can change modes. This is a major hassle. Also, I have used the same pump with the hospital provided parts ( purchased my own tubes) and the expression works better with this than the hands free cups. I get more milk out with the flange setup than the cup setup. What I do like about the product is the ease of cleaning with only 3 parts. I just wish they can made the cups in clear plastic and better yet- a silicone shield. Another thing that can be improved is the display on the pump instrument. I wish there was a way to lock the settings. With the portability of this pump, you can expect to knock it around while you move and the settings get changed. Either the suction level gets knocked up or down or the stimulation / expression modes get changed. That’s annoying.

Super Inconvenient

This pump broke easily. From trying to fit the pump into my pockets, bra with the breast cups, or in my waistband, the pump fell out a couple times and now it shuts off after 5 minutes and won't work unless it's plugged in at all times. They're selling a fanny pack as a storage solution for the pump. Why not make it completely hands-free? I can't care for my baby and pump at the same time because of how large and cumbersome the pump is.

Great concept horrible planning

I bought this product the other week happy to be able to use my medela grade on the go but I’m disgusted that it only comes in the 2 sizes 21mm or 24mm. This product should have been rolled out with multiple sizes in the beginning.

Wonderful

I have had this for about a month and I love it for the convenience. I had a freestyle for my first with the normal pump and loved it. Now with the hands-free it's just as great!
The only difference is that it takes 15 minutes with handsfree cups to get the same amount I would get in 10 minutes with the normal pump. I don't really mind that though since during those 15 minutes I can still do things.

Keeps dying on me

I bought this pump 8-9 months ago. It’s was working wonderfully untill about recently a week ago it started shutting off randomly and won’t turn back on unless I connect it to the charger and hit the “power” button. I love the pump but this is starting to make it harder to pump for my baby who takes milk often

These just spill all your milk everywhere

This is like a first draft product at best. No matter what you do milk is always spilling everywhere. I would say I lose between 1 and 2 oz each time. Then I have to mop the floors, change my clothes, and shower. I loved my Spectra but this is definitely one of the worse breast pumps on the market. Please do not buy this.
Cup Design
1) The cups don't sit upright on the counter when you take them off - so you set them down they roll over and the milk spills everywhere.
2) If you lean over (even just a bit) while wearing them milk pours out top because of the way the product holes are aligned. So you really can't walk around or pick up the baby.
3) Because of the way it's designed you cannot see if your nipple is in the center of the tube making it impossible to know if it's properly aligned without taking it off and looking at how the machine is shaping your nipple; but if you so much as touch the product milk goes everywhere.
Pump Design
1) You're connected to a cord that must be then worn around your wrist - the cord isn't long enough to pull your shirt down over it so you have to be walking around in just a bra to wear it if you're any taller than 5'0".
2) It's a really, really slow pump - in my Spectra I can get 6 oz in about 12 minutes. With this pump it takes about 30 minutes to get 4 oz even on the highest setting. Which compared to the Spectra HURTS.
3) The unit that attaches to your wrist vibrates like crazy to do the pumping. You cannot set it on the counter as it will vibrate itself off the counter which will disconnect the pump and, again, spill milk everywhere.
Of all the babies things I have purchased this was the biggest waste of money. I cannot believe Medela is even selling this. The product designers should be embarrassed. There is no way a mom that has pumped before had anything to do with this design. It feels like it was made by a group of old men that didn't understand breasts.
