great product - we use it almost everyday and eliminated our food waste in our trash while creating compost for our gardens and plants. The bucket is just large enough to hold a day or two's worth of scraps and is odor free while looking attractive on the counter. We keep the composter in our laundry area and it runs odor free as well.
I started outdoor composting last year, and it’s been a great way to reduce food waste in the landfill. I also supplemented my efforts with a home pickup of items like meat and dairy that I didn’t want in the outdoor compost bins. Living in the Midwest, I depended on this pickup service in the winter, as trudging out in frigid weather was not appealing. Enter the Eco 5! Not only do I use the unit daily, I collect the dried product in a 5 gallon bucket with a food safe lid and add EM-1 microbial inoculation to start the composting process each time I add to the bucket. When the weather gets warmer, I’ll add to the outdoor compost pile, ready for more soil production! Saves me the cost of the pickup service and reduces odor. It’s definitely advisable to use a mix of food types (meat scraps, veggies, torn up paper towels) for the best results. Coffee grounds adds a nice smell to the otherwise earthy smell that is produced while the machine is working. Definitely cutting things up into small pieces (2 inch by 2 inch) reduces blade jamming. I have a poultry shears that makes quick work of chicken bones etc. Stringy items like carrot tops did not work well, as the fibers got twisted around the blades, so it’s good to be thoughtful about what goes in. If in doubt, try just a small amount cut up small. I highly recommend, works well!
My household has tried a number of composting strategies in the past, all of which took too long and too much space to be sustained in our family. The Vitamix FoodCycler Eco 5 solved these problems, and now we are able to compost every 1-2 days and significantly reduce our food waste. Over the past few years, we've tried to have a more vegetable-centric diet, so we have more compostable food scraps. The size of the composting bucket is adequately large for our household and built of very durable materials. The unit itself sits atop our counter and has a reasonable footprint for as much food as it composts. Since we use the machine every 1-2 days, food scraps are not sitting around long enough to cause a bad odor. The unit itself is very quiet, and completes a cycle overnight. We have not yet put in avocado pits or chicken bones even though instructions say those are acceptable, they seem a bit hard and don't want to break the machine after only a few months!
I previously owned the smaller Vitamix food recycler, and though it served well, its limited capacity and high noise level were drawbacks. The larger model handles much more kitchen waste, operates more quietly, and produces fantastic results. While it comes with a significant price tag, I genuinely believe it's a worthwhile investment.
The FoodCycler is the best thing ever. It works even better than I'd hoped. The container looks nice on my counter, I have the main part in my pantry, I put the compost collecting container in the base before bed and in the morning I have beautiful "soil." I am so glad I went for it, you should too. Highly recommend!
This might be our favorite appliance of all times. Frankly, it's magic.
We have a tumble composter in the yard, but this is so much more convenient. Yes, I realize this isn't actually compost, but we'll mix the remains with soil and existing compost to help amend the soil.
