Micro Clutch Review
on August 6, 2023
Posted by: Taylor
I recently received my micro clutch, which I got as part of a Kickstarter campaign and I took it out shooting the day after, and for my use case, I really like it because I don't like straps as they hurt my neck and I think they inhibit my ability to shoot, but I didn't like free holding my camera, as I was worried that I would drop it. Enter the Micro Clutch. Once I got an idea of how the product was supposed to fit on my hand, I realized what a genius product it is!
I took a star off because I thought the installation instructions weren't as clear as they could be. They have since made a video and I did find the video to be very clear, so for us visual learners, watch that for installation.

Great product! But missing one thing

I have been a regular Kickstarter supporter of MANY projects. Big and small, if I think it will benefit something that I currently own, I am on top of it. Yes, I have dropped my Sony A6000 one time and I said never again but needed something to assist in that theory. The Micro Clutch did just that. While it was a little tricky to get on for the first time, only because I dislocated my index and middle finger on my right hand, I somehow wish it came with one thing. The only thing that this was missing was a tightening key. A lot of camera products that I have purchased in the past had tightening keys. Even though you aren't supposed to over tighten them, and I understand that, it just would make it a little easier to have an accessory like that. Thankfully, I did have such an item from another previous Kickstarter campaign that worked perfectly, but the flat head part of the tool could have been smaller. But overall, this product does what it's supposed to do, prevent you from buying another camera because you are clumsy.

Great function and execution.

I like the function and execution of the Micro Clutch. The only downside is that it makes my Fujifilm X100s bulkier.

New and unique way to hold your small camera

I used a simple strap with the a FujiFilm body case without the "EverReady" cover for two years, but this is more minimal, and more versatile. I can still use a strap, if I want, and now I can use a tripod, if I want. I have security with this little strap, and can add a cuff strap to make it totally secure. Just a click away, more versatility, More is more!

I purchased the L-plate variant to attach to my Fujifilm X-T5, XF 16-80 and XF 70-300. It definitely assisted with carrying the heavier gear.
There were a few initial comfort issues, though nothing that couldn’t be solved by moving the hand pad and plate. (Pro tip: get the plate just slightly loose, then adjust it while holding the camera the way you usually would.)
The bigger issue for me is that… I don’t really need the Clutch. Turns out I hold my camera at all sorts of angles, not just straight ahead, and once I do that it becomes more comfortable for me to not hold it in the Clutch. This then creates a risk of dropping my gear, so if you’re like me I would highly recommend the Cuff/Capture combination.
None of this is the fault of the product though, so I won’t ding it for that. And it does get out of the way comfortably, not interfering with the camera’s grip.
With regard to the plate covering the battery door, I can’t say it’s been a huge issue. (Though, the Fuji has its card door on the side.) Still, it’s easy enough to remove and replace with the integrated tool.

GR8 4 GRiii

I initially got this for a a7c (meh) but it found its true home on a Ricoh GRiiix. Now I consider it an essential accessory for that camera.
It just makes one-handed shooting so easy; little finger underneath for support, middle two through the loop resting on the lens base, making up for the lack of a grip, index finger on the front dial and shutter, and thumb free for rear controls. Easy to walk around with it loose in hand, and if it’s pocketed the grip is an easy handle to quickly pull it out for action.
Yes, installation requires an extra anchor, and even that’s a tight fit (pull it up through the slot with a loop of floss or nylon leader). But once it’s done, it’s all good.
