Love my Iron Wood 885 after one year. Note issues.

I have owned the Ironwood 885 one year. It has made me look good over and over. Primary reason I purchased it was to smoke large batches of lake trout and salmon. The smoked fish after a couple smokes is perfect.
I will smoke 20# of chicked quarters at a time. Makes perfect checken for salad, barbecue, enchiladsa, tacos, etc. Same with pork shoulder. Ribs are easy for a beginner to make perfect ribs.
I failed on a flat cut brisket. Overcooked it. I will try again with a 15 pound brisket soon.
Issues I had are minimal and easily correctable by the end user. My meat probe became inaccurate. I do not know for sure when or if it was not right when new. I bought an instant read meat thermometer and will see what traeger might do for me in that regard.
I had a fire cooking wings. I used super smoke at 180 for 45minutes then raised the temp to 375. We noticed that we should turn them all. The smoker was full of wings. We started turning them by removing the top rack. We were nearly done flipping the bottom rack when flames ignite from the drip pan. The temp went up to 900 degrees quickly and shut down the smoker automatically. We surmised the burner was burning full on from having the lid open turning the wings. Flames were reaching to a height even with the open lid. We were cooking under our garage breezway. We salvaged most of the wings. The fire went out quickly as the chicken grease was exhausted and the burner shut down. The burner did come on on its own as the temp subsided. I should have unplugged it. I should have reduced the temp setting way doen before opening the lid that long with the full load of chicken wings grease in the drip pan. Of note the drip pan was properly installed. There was very little grease in the grease catch bucket. I used treager aluminum drip pan covers. Seems there should have been more grease in the grease catch not covering the pan where it can ignite. A heads up to staff and end users.
I will appreciate any assistance getting a new heat project.
I would give 5 stars other than these 2 issues. Love my treager!!!

As a smoker the Ironwood is for you. If you want to use it for any type of grilling don’t buy it. I wish I could go back in time and slap myself for buying it.

Hi, and thanks for your feedback on the Traeger Ironwood. As the original pellet grill maker, Traegers have always been known as primarily being smokers. However, due to the way they are designed, they can still do just about anything that a traditional BBQ grill can do, plus a whole lot more. In addition to grilling up steaks and pork chops, complete with seat marks via the reverse sear method, you can also cook other items that are not usually possible on a regular propane or charcoal grill, including whole turkeys, packer briskets, and large pork butts, as well as less traditional smoker/grill foods, such as pies, casseroles and even smoked chorizo & arugula pesto. Before making a final judgement, take a quick look at the huge assortment of recipes that are available at traeger.com/recipes and see what you’ve been missing all this time. You may never go back to an ordinary BBQ grill again.

I have had my ironwood now for a few months. I wanted to wait a bit before reviewing it. On my first cook I loved it. My ironwood is nothing short of amazing. The ease of cleaning is great too. Everything I have cooked on it is the best I have ever experienced. I’m very happy with the ironwood smoker grill.

Love the Ironwood, assembly instructions could have been better, they stopped labeling items which made it really easy. Put this with this, wallah!

The Definition of Innovation!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have had this pellet grill for over a year and I love it! Traeger did some great improvements with the new Ironwood +. This grill is classy and stout! No cheap or thin materials was used in this bad boy. I also own the Timberline 1300 as well, so I'm comparing the Ironwood+ with my Timberline 1300. First of all, the display is a huge improvement. The timberline has a dial and buttons with a black and white display. The Ironwood+ has a color touch screen that is intuitive and beautiful, plus a nice dial. An additional temp probe has been added and that is appreciated! I cook two different meats at the same time quite often and can monitor them both. Another great addition was a light that shines on the cooking surface when the lid is opened. Quite handy if you are cooking in low light conditions. The ash and grease management is a big improvement as well. The ash and grease is funneled and collected into a keg that snaps in place, directly under the grill. Very easy to access and clean. The pellet hopper is very easy to empty. Just pull a lever and the pellets drop into a plastic water tight bin that is stored directly under the hopper. Traeger even included labels to put on the bin that say what pellets are in it. The accessories are great! I love the fold down shelf on the front. My timberline has a fixed 3" shelf that really isn't good for anything. I have a nice spice and sauce basket, and a paper towel or butcher paper holder that snaps onto a flat metal rail that runs along the front and sides of the grill. When I first got this grill, it heated up quickly and cooked evenly across the cooking surface. After about a year it all of the sudden started taking longer to get up to the set temperature. I called Traeger tech support which is great! They said the new models take longer to heat up than the older first gen models but, it was heating up within specs. I personally think that the change in heat up time was due to a software update, since I noticed the change shortly after an update. Other than having to wait 30+ minutes for it to get up to temp, I love it! I love Traegers app too. It is so nice to be able to do a low and slow cook and monitor it from anywhere. I can put my meat on, go to work, and never have to touch it until I get home. I can monitor everything that is going on from the app. If my meat is done before I get off work, I can put the grill into keep warm mode. I can also change the cook temperature, probe temp, or shut the grill down from the app. Both my Traegers cook food perfectly. I love them both but, I really like the innovation that Traeger put in their latest grill lineup. The only negative I find is the price compared to other brands with somilar features. You will pay a premium to own one of the new Timberline or Ironwood. Keep up the good work Traeger!
