Bought this in 2022 so I have used it many times. Hands down the best purchase I made. This thing is a beast. Heavy duty and have run it in 40 below to 100 plus degrees in wind thunderstorm nothing phases it. If you’re shopping for a pellet grill take a good look at the new ironwood you won’t be disappointed. Plus the touch screen is a total plus
Maybe the worst pellet grill out there. Temperature swings all over the place by a lot.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Lucas, we truly appreciate you sharing your experience with us because we know consistent performance is a big part of enjoying every cook, and we can understand how surprising it is when temperatures are not behaving as expected. Large temperature fluctuations can sometimes be connected to airflow restrictions, buildup around the firepot, pellet quality, environmental conditions, or a sensor reading that may not be responding as intended. A thorough cleaning of the firepot and grill interior, checking for pellet condition and consistency, and ensuring the temperature sensor is clean can often help restore steadier operation. We want your grill performing the way it was designed to, and our team would be excited to take a closer look and help pinpoint what’s happening. Please reach out to us at 1-800-TRAEGER so we can work through this together, we can even do a video call to identify any specific behavior in your grill and help get you back to enjoying your cooks.
This review is 1 year after buying grill. I cooked over 350 lbs of beef (1/2 cow) and countless racks of pork ribs and dozens of chickens. I’ve used it for everything.
I purchased the ironwood xl in dec 2024. I thought this grill/smoker was the answer to my dreams, it wasn’t. I am impressed by the flavor the grill gives my food but there are pros and cons to owning it. Pros: food tastes incredible with smoke flavor. The Temp regulation, excellent. Baked and roasts great. Awesome smoker esp with supersmoke feature.
Cons: takes a month to heat up(especially if it’s cold out). I don’t think it dispenses enough pellets to heat up fast. I’ve opened bottom and watched pellets come out at startup. There weren’t many there. I’ve added a handful of pellets a few times and had great results (grill heated up in 1/2 the time. I needed a total new hopper assembly. ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE to install myself. How to video didn’t address wires coming from grill to hopper. (Pro:they sent whole new unit for free) Gets cold quick if top is open (like when cooking on cast iron skillet) Can’t sear a steak the usual way. Not enough direct heat from bottom In my opinion this can not be the only grill you own.
I bought this grill because of Traeger’s American grill status and great warranty. The app went down on thanksgiving while I was cooking a 5 bone rib roast leaving me without my recipe and no connectivity to my grill(technology, pfff).

Good day, Dave. We would like to appreciate you taking the time to share such a detailed reflection after a full year of cooking. Putting more than 350 pounds of beef, along with ribs and chickens, through your grill gives a level of experience that really helps paint a clear picture of how it performs in real use. With grills like the Traeger Ironwood XL Wood, a longer heat-up time can sometimes happen in colder conditions or if pellet flow at startup is slower than expected. The auger typically increases feed once ignition stabilizes, but if the grill is taking significantly longer to reach temperature, it may point to pellet feed calibration, pellet condition, or airflow around the firepot.
Your note about the hopper replacement and installation experience is also valuable for us to hear. That type of comments helps highlight where instructions or videos may need to be clearer for customers installing components themselves. We’d really like to review your experience in more detail, especially regarding the heat-up time and pellet feed behavior, so we can make sure everything on the grill is operating at its best. Feel free to give our team a call at 1-800-TRAEGER and share a few more details about what you’re seeing.
Our Ironwood has been in the shop twice already (under warranty) for electrical issues. It doesn’t turn on and the main brain has been replaced each time. It has happened a third time and once again a gathering of friends turns into a culinary nightmare. I wish that we had purchased a ReqTeq.

Good day, Mark. Thank you for sharing your experience. Repeated electrical failures on a grill like the Ironwood (especially involving the control board) can be caused by power fluctuations, moisture exposure, wiring situations, or underlying component faults that aren’t always resolved by replacing the main controller alone. We understand how disruptive this is, particularly when it affects planned gatherings.
Since this has occurred multiple times under warranty, we recommend contacting Traeger Customer Support directly at 1-800-TRAEGER to request a comprehensive review of the unit, including wiring, power supply, and environmental factors, or to discuss further warranty options. Providing details of the prior repairs will help us determine the most appropriate next steps.
I have had my ironwood now for a few months. I wanted to wait a bit before reviewing it. On my first cook I loved it. My ironwood is nothing short of amazing. The ease of cleaning is great too. Everything I have cooked on it is the best I have ever experienced. I’m very happy with the ironwood smoker grill.
