We bought our first BES920XL Dual Boiler in January 2016. It took a little time to figure out that the coffee grinder we had would not grind the coffee fine enough to make this unit do a 9 bar shot. So, we got the Breville "Smart Grinder Pro". This turned out to be the perfect combination. I used this machine every day for 5 years, with way more than 400 shots per year. I loved that it would wake itself up, and be ready for my morning coffee. I basically do either an Americano or a latte (or two) every morning. To be able to steam your "milk" and extract your shots at the same time was and is awesome. After the 3rd year, the steam valve on the wand started leaking, with no way to shut it off. So, I had to get used to turning the machine off after making whatever coffees I was doing, and bleed the system down. Then, after 4 1/2 years it developed some internal steam leaks. These appear to be in how the internal connections were designed. (My machine was way out of warranty; so, yeah, I took it apart!) All the tubing, which is mostly high temp plastic, has tubing collars that have a pressure held silicon "O" ring; and a little clip that holds the tubing connection into place. This all works fine...until the tubing collar and "O" ring get enough wear on them; and then they won't be held by pressure any more. This causes a lot of steam leaks inside the machine and condensation to build up....which eventually started tripping the GCFI circuits in my kitchen. It was clear, that my unit was not going to perform safely anymore. So, I started researching new machines. I came to the conclusion, after considerable research, that I was not going to find another "home" machine of this quality without spending a small fortune. So, I had had a machine that served me well for 5 years without needing repairs; and did exactly what I wanted and needed it to do. I then discovered that these units are very hard to come by. (Noooooooo!) I even heard that Breville had quit making them! (Again....Noooooooooo!) Well, low and behold, I found one at a well revered coffee equipment retailer and had my new "Dual Boiler" (Yayyyyy!) As a caveat, I am having a bit of difficulty in doing the same process as I have done for 5 years to maintain a 9 BAR+/- shot. Using same coffees, same grind, etc. as I have previously done is not resulting in the maintaining of pressures with this new machine. It builds to the optimum pressure, but then appears to bleed off down to around 5 BAR......? Still trying to figure that out. Any help from Breville tech would be appreciated!
Bought this machine doing extensive research on what I was looking for (PID, dual boiler, etc) and for the money this machine packs a punch! Not quite an end-game machine but I have been super happy with it and will be for years to come!
I am a latte enthusiast. I previously owned the Breville Barista Express machine. It gave me some troubles with the grinder. Also, the milk frothing was slow and inconsistent. I read a lot online I was trying to find if the Dual Boiler has a different frothing pump but I could not find an answer to that. I decided to upgrade to the Dual Boiler and I was so impressed with its capabilities. Although it doesn’t have a grinder built in as the Barista Express, it offers many other features and capabilities. Most notably the frothing is MUCH better. It also features auto-start function so that the machine is hot and ready to go in the morning. You can also control extraction and frothing time and temperature. I combined it with Baratza Sette 270 grinder and got results as shown in the picture.
This is a fine machine that makes great coffee with a few caveats. Those are: the boiler takes a long time to heat and the steam wand is hard to clean. Basically old technology.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
