Received new BES920 today

I like this espresso machine. It is actually my 3rd dual boiler. I started with a 900 that needed professional descaling. Then I upgraded to a 920xl with the descale access. I now have a new BES920 that was sent to me because my 920xl had an issue that could not be repaired. Breville support was, and has been, great. Question: why was the filter design changed? I now have the new style filer, and lots of old style replacement filter pods that I suppose I'll just have to toss away. What is the purpose of the new design? I understand that the new replacements are much more expensive than the old pods. Will the old filter holder and pods fit into the new BES920?
