I think it's a decent printer, but built really cheap. The extension on the tray to accept legal sized paper is SOOOO thin and cheap. Also, the HP Smart Printer keeps coming back to my list of installed printers, even after I delete it. The HP Smart Printer that keeps coming back makes itself the default printer, but won't print. I have to manually select the HP 4001 printer every time I print. And YES I've disabled the option that allows windows to manage my default printer.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi, Dan.
I’m sorry you’ve had software and installation difficulty with your printer. I can wholly understand why being unable to make this device your default printer would be confusing and ultimately frustrating. I want to help you resolve this issue, so I’ll suggest a resource that I hope will guide you to that end.
I can’t tell from your review why the printer has not accepted the default status. Nice printer but don't buy it. Replacement toner costs more than the printer

Hi there.
I’m sorry you’ve had a difficult start with your printer. I can wholly understand your dismay if you’ve looked to buy a replacement toner cartridge and the price was more than you paid for the device itself. I want to help you resolve this issue, so I’ll provide some clarifying information and a resource that I hope will reach that goal.
First, I can’t tell from your review how much you paid for the printer or the cost of the toner cartridge you found. A quick web search for this model shows it costs $319 here on the HP Store, marked down from $450. The standard size toner cartridge, the HP 148A, costs $111.19 and has an estimated yield of 2,900 pages. The higher-capacity cartridge, the HP 148X, costs $226.99 and is expected to produce 9,500 pages.
If you need further clarification or believe a problem exists with your printer, I recommend that you contact us directly at +1 800-474-6836. To expedite the process, I recommend gathering the following information before the call:
- Model number - Serial number - Your location - Case number (from any previous contact with HP support)
Finally a HP printer that works with my wife's Chromebook. Couldn't get any of three other HP printers to connect using WiFi or USB. Connected this one with USB and running thru Chromebook printer setup, it worked.
I have a very skeptical about wifi recovery feature from HP. Most printers cannot wake up after a long deep sleep. I tested many times with this feature and it works without a hitch. The output is very sharp and clean, shading is great. I had some confused at the wifi setup because the menu is very limited option, required to download setup software. That's the only thing I don't like.
I purchased this printer because I was assured it could print checks with the correct ink for depositing and everytime we print a check it does not accept the check.
