Simple and effective

I upgraded from a 820 Edge.
First off putting all the sensors and such to the 1040 is a breeze. 2nd, I can actually see the information I want while riding without readers on. Pretty simple to import what information you want to see.
3rd, battery life is phenomenal!!! Really happy with my 1040

I always wanted a cycling computer but didn’t know where to start so my wife purchased this as a Father’s Day gift and I couldn’t be happier. I am still learning all that it can do and the details that I receive cave helped with my workouts. It has also prompted me to purchase a new bike…

Nice Upgrade

Enjoying the new features and screen layout. Only one recurring glitch prevents me from giving this 5 stars. Often acts like it is shutting down when in fact in remains on in the background and drains the battery. I cycle through the shut down procedure only to later learn it never shut down.

Worth waiting for!

I've had the former flagship model (1030) for several years. Things were getting a little tired and slow ... and the age of the unit was showing. I considered a HH2, but decided to wait for the next iteration of the Edge - and I'm glad I did! The 1040 is sharp, fast, and so far no issues (knock on wood).

Large Screen, Great Battery Life!
on July 10, 2022

Really glad I waited several months for the 1040 model to be released before purchasing a Garmin. As an older cyclist riding gravel, my eyes really appreciate the large screen and the battery life to support it. This is my first navigation device and I really appreciate the easy setup and the intuitive controls. Still exploring many of the advanced features, but I know I am going to like them. Opted for the normal bundled model, not the solar. Could not rationalize the cost benefits of solar for century rides when I have 35 hours of battery life on a standard model. Having the HRM, cadence and speed displays in front of me all the time is huge for training. Overall, very happy with the Edge 1040 and looking forward to my first race with it over an unknown course.

Excellent Customer Support for Integration
on July 11, 2022

I live in Central Idaho and often cycle, ski and paddle solo off the cell phone grid. Accordingly, I sought a cycling specific computer with off-grid live tracking and map navigation. After researching various Garmin products, and calling Garmin Customer Support, I purchased an In-Reach Mini2 and an Edge 1040. The Mini2 provides the off-grid live tracking as well as off-grid texting to family and friends, and SOS to emergency services. After initial setup, I did call Garmin Customer Support to complete the integration and syncing of both devices with each other, with the Garmin apps (2), and with my laptop. In addition, I use Strava, so I had to get both devices set up to report activities to Strava, create routes, and then upload routes to the Edge 1040. The Garmin Customer Support rep was absolutely awesome; he helped me through the process, and then we tested all the integration across devices and platforms. Once I understood the difference between Glances and Widgets on the Edge, I added a Widget screen for the In-Reach Mini2 so now I can operate the Mini2 through the Edge provided the Mini2 is turned on. This works seamlessly! Although I wish there was a single cycling specific computer with In-Reach capability, the combination of both units works well.
The Edge 1040 is very capable, although I don't use all the power and training functions. The screen is sharp, and it's easy to swipe pages from stats to map to profile to etc. All these pages (glances?) are customizable (data fields/screen). I'm quite pleased.
Suggestion for Garmin: please include 2 inserts and 2 mounts in the Bundle package so that the unit can be installed on at least 2 bikes. Also, the rubber protector should also come with the bundle, and not require a separate cost and order.
Cool stuff, and it's now much safer to ride off grid.

Upgrade worth the investment

I had the 1030 and 1030+ before. Between the two there is no big difference. But there is in comparison to the 1040. I always had issues with SRAM and Garmin accessory connectivity. That is now over. I like the battery status update at the end of the ride. The only issue I have is with the screen brightness. The 1040 is borderline. The solar would be too dark for me. Not readable through sunglasses. All together if you a lot of electronic accessories the 1040 is a must.

Just WOW 9/10

Love the battery life, scree size, clarity and speed of the unit. My only gripe would be a larger thicker more prominent route line when following a course. Just like the Karoo2. Add that and it's 10/10 or 5 stars.
