Design flaws
on September 20, 2021

from California
My dryer is working exactly as it was intended and that is where the problem lies.
Two big design flaws with this machine:
1) Automatic/Regular cycle has heat settings bunched so close together (Max Dry, More Dry, Less Dry) it is nearly impossible to know which setting the dial is pointing to. Dial does not click on each option to let you know which of these you've chosen. I cannot tell if the white line is pointing on Max Dry or More Dry. They had the space to spread out the heat settings if Cool Down and Extended Tumble hadn't been given so much space. Auto Cycle has the worst layout!
2) Every cycle ends with a long Cool Down. They did this to save energy by turning off heat to make use of residual heat...however if my items are not fully dry when the cycle has completed and I want to give it an extra shot of heat there is NO setting that allows this! The last 15 minutes of Time Dry is a cool down so to get just 5 minutes of heat I have to run the dryer for 20 minutes! Where's the energy savings in that? For a few extra minutes to dry the items to my satisfaction I have to set my own timer to manually stop the dryer. For a machine without a moisture sensor there will be times when the user does not calculate the precise time it will take to dry a load, sometimes it will need more heat. How could SQ ignore/fail to anticipate this?

DO NOT Buy This Dryer

Bought dryer in January 2023. It started making black grease marks on our white clothes March 2023. Repairman didn't have the parts to repair it. He said would order parts and come back. The part was supposed to be available mid April. The part still isn't available & Speed Queen customer service can't tell me when it will be. In the meantime, I have to go to the laundromat to dry white clothes.

Hi Terri,

We are very sorry to hear your parts to have your machine repaired are delayed. After further review, we did discover your parts are estimated to be here 5/5. We understand how frustrating this is for you and we do appreciate your patience during this process. Our servicers order parts through distributors, not directly from us. Your servicer will need to follow up with the distributor they have ordered the parts through. If the distributor does not have the part(s) in stock and placed an order with us, the servicer will need to get that order number from their distributor. We unfortunately can only view orders that have been placed with us by distributors. In the meantime, if there is anything more we can assist you with, please feel free to give us a call. We are available Monday through Friday 8:30am - 4pm CST.

Not what was expected - poor preformance

Washer does not clean clothes as well as old GE set. Makeup rags come out with makeup remaining, dirt still in clothing. Dryer either melts some materials, or takes two cycles to dry. Too expensive for what it is. (2 service calls)

Hello,

We are so sorry to hear about your dryer! We can understand how frustrating this may be for you & would love to help assist you with better dry results.

1. How many minutes of dry time are actually required to dry your typical clothes load? An average load will usually take 40-55 min to dry on High.

2. How much water is remnant in the clothes load when they are removed from the washer? If the final spin speed of the washer is no longer optimal, more water retention will occur resulting in longer dry times.

3. The dryer may not be properly installed including:
a) The dryer exhaust system has a restriction in it such as a kinked looped or compressed section, an obstruction of some type in the duct in the duct , an excessive duct length, or the use of a wrong duct material. A restriction in the exhaust system will cause slower air speeds through the heating element or combustion duct area, causing a safety limit thermostat to open, and temporarily shut down the heat circuit. Repeated occurrences of this action will result in a decrease in the actual heating function within a cycle. Rigid, or flexible 4" metal duct is required for exhaust vents, plastic flexible duct should not be used. An exhaust system can be tested for conformance with a device called a manometer. The pressure in the exhaust duct should not exceed 0.6 inches water column, measured on the exhaust duct 2 feet from dryer (checked with dryer running and no load).

b) The dryer is located in a room that does not have access to make-up air. Make up-air can be considered to be the air that is able to flow into the dryer area to replace the air that is being exhausted at an approximate rate of 220 CFM (Cubic feet per minute). This is not usually an issue with small dryers but may occur with newer, air tight, super insulated homes.

4. The dryer may only be operating on 208V rather than 240V for electrically heated models. Speed Queen dryers are manufactured with a 240V heating element but if the location only has 208V, the heating capability of the dryer will be reduced, resulting in longer dry times. In such a case, the existing heating element should be changed to a 208V version.

5. Ensure that there is no lint built up in or underneath the lint screen. If so, remove and clean as necessary.

Of course, if you are still needing assistance, please give us a call. We are available Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4pm CST.

Not impressed with new Speed Queen washer/dryer

Ran 3 loads of clothes requiring two drying cycles for each. On the 4th. load the dryer would not work leaving me a lot of wet clothes over a long holiday weekend. The following week a service man came to check the dryer. After a thorough check and then a final check a loud pop sounded from the dryer resulting in black smoke infiltrating the back of my house. The dryer was removed from my home and another of the exact type installed. Even the replaced dryer does not dry clothes without running 2 cycles.

We’re truly sorry for the experience you had with your first dryer and are saddened to learn you haven’t had satisfactory results from the new one. So, let’s see what tricks we have to help with this! First, we recommend checking the exhaust system is made of a rigid metal duct vs the foil accordion type, and that its not blocked or restricted. Also make sure the link filter is cleared after each cycle so no air flow is restricted. Then if using the Auto-Sensing cycle, try adjusting the dryness level towards More or Max dry. You can also adjust the Fabric Selector knob to change the temperature the dryer uses for each cycle. The Auto-Sensing cycles are generally not suggested for very small loads, and we’d recommend the Timed Dry cycle instead. If you’re already following all these tips, connect with our Customer Support Line at 800-522-5475, Monday to Friday (8:30am – 4pm Central Standard Time), and we’ll work together to achieve the best results!

Back to the basics

The SpeedQueen Washer gets my clothes cleaner in less time than the newer energy efficient machines. SpeedQueen works like the older washing machines with the agitator but actually less time, thus saving electricity. And…,the SpeedQueen does not make your clothes smell bad, (other machines build up mold in the machine and requires occasional cleaning), or your clothes will not smell clean. Also, the SpeedQueen has a 5 year warranty whereas most others have a 1 year warranty (unless you pay extra). You do pay more for a SpeedQueen, but it is worth it.

Not a good start

1st delivery attempt. Driver informed us the washer "appears to have been dropped" and notable damage inside the washer and unable to bring in our home. 2nd delivery attempt driver informed us the dryer was missing one of the front plastic feet. Folded over some cardboard for it to sit on and told us to call store where we bought it and they would take care of the problem, called the store and I went and picked up the plastic foot and attempted to screw it into place. Called the store again and they sent another delivery crew to remedy and they informed us the dryer had damage underneath and unable to screw in the front foot. Waited another week and they brought out a new dryer....Finally we could wash and dry clothes (without the cardboard repair.) Then we were notified by Speed Queen that this "claim" was not covered under the warranty? Other than all this hassle units seem to be functioning properly so far.

Excellent commercial home dryer. Dryer up grated since I purchased my washer. Works great and the placement of the lint collector is easier to clean. Dryer also has an inside light to see what you are doing
