The mattress feels good right out of the box. It is a bit on the stiffer side, which is perfectly fine for me, but others may not enjoy a stiffer mattress. I bought this for my college dorm and it is definitely better than what was given to me. I don't think this mattress is for side sleepers though. If you try to sleep on your side your arm will get squished under your body unless splayed out, which is not something that can be done on a twin xl, but perhaps its more comfortable on a larger mattress.
