Good kit but not essential.

This is a useful, but probably not essential piece of kit. Sometimes I just look at the flames. If they are high, that's good cookin' time. If they are low, add more wood and wait.

Without this it's difficult to know how long you need to wait for the oven to be ready. Thermometer is easy to use

Works good. Found useful 1st couple of times but with some practice with my Karu don't really need it. Still a handy piece though.
