I bought this printer for its compact size and multi functions. The ink used is outrageous! On line reviews seem to agree that this printer's software determines when ink is out and when printer can no longer function because the test ink pad is saturated. With ink prices at $50+ I'm considering scrapping it for another brand. It's a shame the Epson brand has been tarnished by an effort to sell more ink instead of designing a product that minimizes ink usage for the consumer.

I love this printer but it sucks ink!

The XP-800 is better than the Artisan 800 it replaced (I sure love having automatic both-sides printing now), but I have to replace ink cartridges far more frequently. My Staples store doesn't carry the XL cartridges so I haven't tried them, but I'll get them through Epson and if they don't reduce my costs, I probably won't buy another XP-800.

I've been using it as a network printer. It works great and has a very good printing quality. I've started using the scanning feature and see no cons it. It is a printer and scanner you'll love to use. Have not tried the CD Label or Fax features as I do not need them. I highly recommend this printer for its features and compact size.

No 8 1/2 x 14 tray

I bought this printer because I needed a smaller footprint than that of my old printer. That part is great and it fits better in my work area. But I didn't realize that there was no tray for legal size paper. It can be fed in but that could get tedious. Fortunately there is another printer that is available on our network. If you need to print 8 1/2 x 14 and this would be your only printer then look elsewhere. Otherwise it is a very good printer.

I am very happy with all features of this printer so far. It is networked wirelessly to my computer, prints quickly and looks good. I wish the paper tray held more paper, but appreciate the the extra paper tray and CD printing function more. I was dealing with a space constraint and could not find an automatic 2-side printer until this one that offered all these features. My only complaint, and I am frustrated by this, it uses all the colors of ink when only printing in BLACK! Then when one cartridge is empty, it refuses to print anything at all. Must be a workaround for that, if you have black ink, you should be able to print black and not use up your color ink. Otherwise, I am happy with it, it even has automatic document feeding which I have used several times and love.

Versatile Device

Good for general printing, photos and special media.
Three media inputs (standard paper, photo paper and card stock) make this printer more versatile then one may realize.
The rear feed can be used for card stock, other media or envelopes. It is very convenient to use this rear feed for single page printing because the media can be loaded easily and without removing media from the paper or photo cassettes.
The supplied printer driver does a good job of pre selecting a print quality setting and permitting changes.

Good, but...

Generally works well, standard text and photos both print fine. Scanning and faxing are OK as well. The big "Cons" for me are the small capacity of the letter-size feeder tray, and the lack of a front or top single sheet paper feed. A smaller complaint is that not all letters come out readable when printing in draft mode (for example, using Times, the lower case "e" often reads as a "c").

This prints very good pictures but if you are looking for an all in one that has good fax ability maybe you should look elsewhere. We have have trouble with the fax from day one. Even had someone from the store come set it up and it did not stay. Tried to use it for property sale in another state and ended up scanning and emailing the papers. Would recommend for a good copy, scan, print but not fax.
