I received the new Casper on June 16th. I unpacked it and unrolled it onto the bed. The chemical stink was quite noticeable, but not nearly as bad as a memory foam mattress that I had bought several years ago from a local chain store. I left the mattress uncovered for two days, then put a mattress protector on, then sheets. I slept on it for one night. This resulted in my having a headache in the morning from the strong chemical odor. I stripped the bed, sheets and mattress protector, leaving the Casper mattress cover on. I washed the lines. I set a fan up next to the mattress so that air would blow across it to help speed up the off gassing process. At one point I unzipped the top cover from the Casper and laid that out in another room to air with hopes that that would speed up the off gassing process. This seemed to help a little, but I should not have had to do it in the first place. The odor seemed to have abated after a little more than a week. I zipped the Casper cover back on, put the mattress protector on and put the sheets back on. NOPE, this mattress still has a chemical odor. My bed clothes and pillow absorb the chemical odor each night. Each morning I pull the blanket off and fold the sheets down to let the mattress air out. It is now July 10th and the mattress is still off gassing these chemical odors, but at least it isn’t giving me a headache. The question is, how long will this go on for? Using the cheap memory foam mattress experience, I am assuming this could take several weeks. The other company’s foam mattress had such a bad odor I had them replace it with a new one, which was just as bad and still took several weeks to stop smelling bad. I figure the same issue will be with the Casper and the last thing I want to do is start over from day one with the airing out process. I’m hoping the stink will go away before the 100 day trial period is over….long before the trial period is over.
Now for comfort. Yes, this is a comfortable mattress. It does take getting used to. The mattress that the Casper replaced was a pillow top inner spring mattress which was causing me pain. I’m a side sleeper and the pain in my shoulders on the inner spring mattress was getting unbearable due to the pressure points. This pressure point pain issue has done away with the Casper. What I’m still trying to figure out is if the Casper is providing enough support. I’m still evaluating, but so far so good. I’ll have to write an update on this later.
The real sticking point is the chemical odor. I am hoping this will be gone soon. It's been 21 days and it still has an odor. It's slight now, but still there. This does bring to question the quality of the materials. I also find it interesting that there is no indication of what country this mattress is made in or what country the materials are sourced from. Being “designed” in the USA does not mean manufactured in the USA. That isn’t necessarily an issue. Plenty of fine products are manufactured overseas, however the quality of the product is up to the company, Casper in this case, to ensure. If the company does not specify a specific quality and if the company does not have a trusted representative actually visiting the factory to ensure the quality is there, then the risk of a low quality product, or inferior materials is possible.
