Extraordinarily Delicate. No fun at all.

I have to agree with the negative reviews. I have spent almost as much time trying to repair this model, as building it. The engine falls out. The back door is weak. The doors and kick-board on the kitchen unit have no strength. Do not even think about picking it up by the cross piece above the sliding door. The front falls off and it’s really, really hard to rebuild because you can’t push on anything without it breaking. Previous van was much, much better (one of my favorites). The sliding door is clever. I think this model is trying to be too clever by half.

FRUSTRATING AND DISAPPOINTING

I found this to be just simply awful. I have a theory about why there are some very good and some very bad reviews on this. Perhaps they are made in different factories.
That is the only explanation I can come up with because if you got the set I did, it was obviously very very very flawed. Everything bad that others describe also happened to me (except no missing parts). I especially had trouble with the front end and the roof. Other parts were very fiddly too, but those two areas proved especially problematic.
I successfully built the sliding door (loved it), and even conquered the back hatch and engine compartment sections, with a lot of patience. Did the side hinged doors, even though I thought they were not very well supported.
But the front end and the roof, whew. I put them together just fine, but when adding the new sections to the build, it caused other parts (or parts of the new section I was adding) to fall off. Yes, I checked and double-checked. Yes, everything I assembled was firmly placed. Yes, I built them correctly. No, I am not a beginner by any stretch.
Finally, at bag 11, I gave up. Decided life is short and didn't want to waste even one more minute on this. I have never ever had a Lego build experience like this in all the many sets I've done. I don't recommend it. I have to give a thumbs down on this one.

Nightmare set

This set was a nightmare to build. I’m a fairly proficient builder who buys all the big sets. Never have I had to bust out the glue to hold a set together while building it. Pieces were popping off when adding other pieces. I was happy to be done with this and put it on the shelf to never use it again. To top it all off 2 pieces were missing from the set, which I need to have sent to me. Total disaster. Thumbs down all around.

Amazing Set

Initially went back and forth on whether or not to buy this set based on the reviews and the fact that I'm not a huge VW fan, but really glad that I ultimately got it. Yes, it does require patience and is a decently complex build, but that's why it says "18+" on the box. Those willing to take their time and follow the instructions will end up with a truly amazing reproduction of the classic T2. My fiancée and I, both longtime Lego enthusiasts, were impressed with both the level of engineering and the quality of the details in this set. Best Lego building experience I've had since I was a kid.. Cannot recommend it enough to anyone looking for a fun build!

Don't listen to all the Static

I really looked forward to getting this Van after building the VW Beetle and the T1. My Dad owned several Volkswagen Vans including this model. The reveiws came in fast and hard with a lot of vitriol so I was really getting nervous... was this actually the total bomb most people described it as? Cumbersome and delicate?? Absolutely not! I experienced none of the issues spoken about besides the occassional piece coming loose. People deal with it! Its not a race and at this level you should just be patient and enjoy rebuilding things if you have too, its a small price to pay for some challenge and brillance of design. It is lights out as far as detail and no doubt about it the best VW to date. Actually all the fuctionality built in works and adds new depth to these vehicles. I had a moment of the roof not sitting flush and yes the little knob pops of the tailgate (waaaaaaahh!) But easy remedies and in no way took away from the experience or the finished product which in my opinion is amazing! Lego designers sleep well tonight, job well done. I also recommend the Space Shuttle if this set hooks you back on Legos. It out of this world :)

The amazing breakaway bus

Enough said. All the reviews I have read about this van are accurate. It will fall apart at some point. Yes, it is essential to build accurately. But, getting to the end and putting the top on only to have the back fall apart, including the engine is heartbreaking. Repair that and the front end will fall apart. This was not a fun build.

Very Fragile

I found this build to be poor quality. There are many small pieces which don’t fasten securely, leading to issues with the doors, front bumper, and roof canopy. I’ve never had a problem with builds until this one. A redesign is required.
