Missed the mark in several areas
on September 4, 2021

I was very excited to see this set with all the unique colors and elements. However, there were a few things that just didn't do this set justice.
1. The curtains in the van look extremely cheap. I would have rather them removed fromthe set entirely, or make better quality. 2. The top doesn't close properly. It seems overly complicated for a feature that quite honestly doesn't need to be there. When pushed down, it doesn't line up. 3. The back hood (which shows the engine) doesn't close properly. Rebuilt it three times to try and figure it out, but seems like a design flaw.

Very easy to fall apart

The bumper is too easy to fall apart when build it. I have tried multiple times to put it together and it falls apart in the next step, which makes me very frustrated. I bought T2 because I have T1. However, the overall design and interior design is not as good as T1.

Horrible

I have read many of the other reviews about how fragile this build is. At first, I really only had one issue with the back door which I would have to agree it is super fragile. Since reading the other reviews I took my time to be careful but I have had 2 major breaks in building this model. In putting the windshield section in the front bumper section fell off. Ok no big deal but in trying to put the bumper back the entire front section with one front door fell off the model. I have built over 50 models in the last year or so and have never had this much trouble. Also reading the responses from LEGO they seem to be burying their heads in the sand by saying they test to make sure the blocks fit tightly together. Maybe after all of these reviews that say it’s fragile they should look into as there seems to be a major issue with this particular set. Very disappointed and given the price it’s not worth the money.

Great model - just pay attention while you build!

This is a very nice build: challenging (in the best sense of the word) with the end result a real beauty. I’m puzzled as to all the negative reviews on this one — just need to pay attention as you build, but that is true of any advanced model. I really love all the cool details on this one, from the cabin refrigerator to the beach chairs. Again, a great model - highly recommended,

pretty result, but structure needs improvement

Avoided reading reviews before starting the build, but heard enough to take extra care. Overall, most areas of the build were fine, but some sections were less robust than most other LEGO sets. This added to the "fragility" that others have complained about, since it was too easy to dislodge parts of the build while installing new sections. For example, once you put the engine in place, the engine door is at risk of coming apart when you try to open it because of the stiffness and lack of robust handle. Installing the front windshield section and locking it into place was quite challenging since you are trying to connect plates where the force to push them together can result in the mounting piece being dislodged if you don't hold it. After a few more steps, the top was more secure, but it never felt as strong as other LEGO vehicle builds. Little things just seem unfinished, like the flimsiness of front doors, with only one hinge point and the bumper section just attached with plates. My overall impression is that this set was released too soon. It should have gone through another design/structure review where these issues could have been fixed. Sad to say it, but If this were a real car, there should be a recall. I expect more from LEGO and hope they will learn from this.

Response from LEGOBy John, LEGO® Customer Service, August 27, 2021
We're sorry to hear there's trouble with your build. If it seems like it's not very sturdy, we recommend double-checking that every piece is where it should be and pushed together all the way. We're always happy to help at LEGO.build/Service-BV and pass your feedback along to the right team!

Camper needs a structure
on August 18, 2021

This set was complicated and in that you had to hold the camper with one hand and put stuff like the front bumper and window into a very narrow spot with little holding it correctly with the other hand. The vehicle already weighed at least 10 lb and very fragile by the time you got to step 8. The instructions should be redone and built bottom to top not all over the place. I did speak with someone at lego and they noted my issues.

Hang 7 dudes...
on August 24, 2021

Well, it isn't a "Hang 10", but it's interesting anyway.
The T2 is bigger than the T1. Maybe VW was still trying to create something unique in the van and LEGO is not to blame for the less than creative coloring. That grey floor! The interior is kind of boring too, but does have some cool touches, like the fold up table. I do not understand why they sacrificed the front seat floor space for turning wheels. All those pieces just to turn wheels? The doors all need better construction not to fall apart when pressed too hard. The rear engine falls apart easily and the rear engine door seems to interfere with the motor and loosens pieces. Again, why sacrifice space in the popup with so many pieces that don't even speak to the actual use of the popup. The back bumper should be put in with pegs. This one is just like the T1 - not secure to the touch. The chairs are cool. The surfboard is cool. The folding seat is cool. The stickers are cool. The curtains are weird and softer material maybe would have let them sit better in the windows.
It's like the B-side of a hit record. It may catch on one day, but the A-side is always gonna be the real hit.

Awesome!! and made me a better builder

So I don’t typically leave reviews for the Lego sets and products I purchase. I believe that there are so many different aspects about the system to enjoy, and ultimately the build experience will vary depending on the individual. For example, one person might get really excited about mini figures, another might value play functions. There’s the technical aspect of some themes, aesthetics or how well the set will display, the list goes on. My point is what may be an amazing experience for one person might be completely different for another. That’s not to say the review process isn’t helpful, it can be in a lot of ways, it just doesn’t mean that much to me. I’m generally more concerned with how I feel while building a set and while examining the end result. I do pay attention to reviews, especially for new products, which brings me to the reason I’m writing this one. I knew I was going to buy this set the moment it was released. I don’t have a favorite “theme”, I make my choices based on one determining factor. Does the product interest me. This one did. Also, I get the most satisfaction during those “aha” moments, when I experience a new technique, or combination of system mechanics. I was surprised to see the amount of 3-star reviews this one was getting. I admit it made me a little skeptical. After finally receiving it and finishing the build I can honestly say it was one of the more difficult builds Ive completed, and one of the most rewarding. Kudos to Sven and the design team for creating an outstanding example of what can be accomplished using the parts available at this point in Lego history. This VW T2 “Camper Van” (I’ve always known them as a VW Bus). lt is so unbelievably true to the source material, it’s astounding. I’ve had a few friends that had them in my younger years and spent a ton of time (when they were running) inside of them hanging out at music festivals. The working details (too many to count) that were put into this build are amazing and fun. The final product looks fantastic in that beautiful blue (left the stickers in the box). Did I have to backtrack during the build so that everything operated just right? A few times. Precision counts. Did it interrupt the Zen of the build? Of course. Was the feeling sublime after everything was together and working as I put on the wheels (and awesome hubcaps)? Most definitely. Yes there are parts of this build that are challenging, sometimes even a little frustrating, but they just needed a little patience and focus. Ive built so many sets, wouldn’t try to keep count. It’s nice when one can come along and challenge me again.
